Happy New Year, Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans!

Well, the end of 2022 is only a day away, and a new year is about to begin.  I hope everyone stays safe this Saturday night, as you don't want to start 2023 with an unfortunate incident.

Like being stalked by a crazed slasher in a goofy mask.  That'll put a damper on the holiday!

This edition of the Weekly Update is a bit shorter, as I started making the change I wrote about a couple weeks ago.  One addition is that I will not be posting the weekly screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Clinton Street Theater.  I'll continue to post when another venue has a screening, as such shows might be overlooked, but I suspect most everyone in the Pacific Northwest knows the history of that film and the Clinton Street Theater.  

By the way, I found out a few hours ago that the Clinton Street Theater will start the weekly screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 11 pm starting on Saturday, January 7.  Adjust your calendar accordingly.

Also, you should check it out the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar, as I've found some great events coming in January.  To start, the January Revival Series at the Academy Theater in Portland, OR, is bringing some great sci fi films to the big screen, as well as the Harry Potter films through Order of the Phoenix.  I've got the entire schedule listed, so you can plan your month accordingly.  

The Sprocket Society returns to The Grand Illusion Cinema in Seattle, WA, with the Saturday Secret Matinees.  Each week featuring an episode of King of the Rocket Men, and a secret film, all in GLORIOUS 16mm.  

Later this month, the Central Cinema in Seattle, WA, will screening The Shape of Water and Creature from the Black Lagoon.  It's not a double feature, but hell, I'd pay separate admissions to see both of them on the big screen back to back!  

Finally, the Rio Theatre in Vancouver, BC, bringing Into the Stripper-Verse to the stage at the end of January.  Yep, it's your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and friends, in a production that WILL NOT be a Marvel Special Presentation.

The Marvel Universe of Super Heroes makes a stop at OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave in Portland, OR) through April 9, 2023.  Marvel (see what I did there) at the hundred of artifacts, from original comic book pages, interactive displays, life-size statues of Marvel heroes, costumes and props from films and TV programs, and MUCH MORE.  Excelsior! 

The Museum of Pop Culture (325 5th Ave N in Seattle, WA) has Jim Henson puppets and set pieces from the 2019 Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on display now.  You can read about the display, and the work the museum put into displaying the artifacts, at the link.

The Pale Blue Eye, starring Christian Bale as a detective investigating a murder at a military academy with cadet Edger Allen Poe (Harry Melling), is playing at the Salem Cinema (1127 Broadway St NE in Salem, OR; scheduled through Thursday, January 5).

 

Violent Night, featuring Santa Claus taking down a bunch of mercenaries, opens tonight at the Yelm Cinemas (201 Prairie Park St SE in Yelm, WA; scheduled through Thursday, January 5), and the Sandy Cinema (16605 Champion Way in Sandy, OR; scheduled through Thursday, January 5).   You can read my review of the movie here.

The CMNYK Sci Fi Extravaganza  brings Kronos, starring Jeff Morrow and Barbara Lawrence, to the Darkside Cinema (215 SW 4th St in Corvallis, OR) tonight at 7 pm.  Preshow starts at 6:15 pm.

Thursday, January 5

Night Flight's 2023 Attic of Wondrous Things runs through Sunday, January 8, at the Portland Playhouse (602 NE Prescott St in Portland, OR).  The show follows the demon Handsome Hank as he visits his grandmother's attic and open trunks filled with knickknacks and memories.  Saturday and Sunday, you can check out the All Ages/Family Friendly Lost Treasure at 2:30 pm. But at 7 pm Thursday through Sunday, the show becomes the 18 and older Dangerous Delights.  Early bird tickets are available now.

Weird Elephant at The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) presents the sci fi anime classic Akira tonight and tomorrow night at 10 pm.

Okay, this one JUST makes the grade, as it involves Shaolin monks and maybe some magic.  And it was filmed in Portland, OR!  VHS Late Night at CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) presents Brain Smasher... A Love Story, starting Andrew Dice Clay and Teri Hatcher, in GLORIOUS VHS tonight at 10 pm.  Directed by Albert Pyun (The Sword and the Sorcerer, Radioactive Dreams, Dollman), CineMagic calls this "the strangest film ever shot in Portland."  Read the description and judge for yourself!  VHS Trailers start at 9:30 pm.

The Sprocket Society presents Saturday Secret Matinees 2023 every Saturday through March 25 at 1 pm, in GLORIOUS 16mm, at The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA).  Each Saturday starts with a new episode from the classic serial King of the Rocket Men, followed by a secret film.  The clue for today and next week's film is It Came from Planet Blech!

 

 

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will show all three extended versions of Peter Jackson's classic The Lord of the Rings trilogy today.  You can come in costume, or just stay in your PJs.  The show starts at 11 am.

 

The trilogy is also playing at McMenamin Kennedy School (5736 NE 33rd Ave in Portland, OR) starting at 11 am.  I'm unsure if it's the extended or theatrical versions being shown.
