Of course, I'm still behind on updates to the site. It's October, and to be expected.

October, the MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR, gets a bit overwhelming at The Shadow Over Portland office (well, actually my desk in a corner of my apartment), and I'm never able to get all the great events out on time, and miss the dates on a few.  And even more keep popping up every day.

Okay, I've got everything covered.  What the hell, there's even MORE?!?!?

So, if you want to see everything that will make it to the site (if I get to post it before the event's date), head over to my Facebook page and scroll down.  Any event I haven't "LIKED" is likely not on the site yet.  You might come across some I have found through other avenues and have been added, but it's a good way to see what will end up on the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar at some point (hoping this weekend).  And this includes events that will be on the Halloween Haunted Attractions 2023 page as well.

Live Attractions

FOOLISH MORTALS: A Haunted Mansion Burlesque Cabaret returns to The Alberta Rose Theatre (3000 NE Alberta St in Portland, OR) with three performances this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Tickets are on sale NOW!

Haunted Taft Tours are back every Saturday in October.  The walking tour departs the Sapphire Center (4840 SE Hwy 101 in Lincoln City, OR), and you are advised to dress for rain before departing on the tour pointing out the haunted spots in the area.  This is the Pacific Northwest, after all.

The Boo-Coda Spook-Tacular is happening now in Bucoda, WA ("The World's Tiniest Town with the Biggest Halloween Spirit; confirmed by Wikipedia, so it must be true).  Visit the link for all the events taking place.

The Great Wolf Lodge (20500 Old Highway 99 SW in Centralia, WA) is celebrating Howl-O-Ween through Halloween night.  Visit the link for the details (Be aware, not all events will happen at this location; it's recommended you use the mobile app to find out what's happening at this location).

Experience Theatre Project brings Misery: A Live Immersive Theatrical Event to the Beaverton Masonic Lodge (4690 SW Watson in Beaverton, OR) through Saturday, October 28.  This performance of the Stephen King novel will be performed in an immersive fashion, placing the audience within inches of the performers.  The performance is recommended for those 13 and older.  No surprise there.

Hidden Worlds: The Films of LAIKA is open at the Museum of Pop Culture (located in the Seattle Center; 325 5th Ave N in Seattle, WA).  The exhibit features never-before-seen artifacts from the Laika production studios, immersive set displays, character interactive and a sneak peek at the studio's next feature, Wildwood.  The exhibit will be open through Summer 2024.

 

The Museum of Pop Culture (325 5th Ave N in Seattle, WA) has Jim Henson puppets and set pieces from the 2019 Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on display now.  You can read about the display, and the work the museum put into displaying the artifacts, at the link.

Halloween Film Series/Festivals

The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulhu Con takes place this weekend at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR).  Details have yet to be announced.

UPDATE:  Suitable Flesh, a film based on H. P. Lovecraft's The Thing on the Doorstep, (directed by Joe Lynch, adapted by Dennis Paoli (screenwriter of Re-Animator and From Beyond), and starring Barbara Frampton and Heather Graham), will make its Pacific Northwest premiere at the Festival.

The festival is also showcasing the North American premiere of director Sean Hogan's To Fire You Come at Last (produced by Kier-La Janisse, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched), a throwback to British folk horror of the 60s.

The Spooktober Series at the 5th Avenue Cinema (510 SW Hall St in Portland, OR) will show the sci fi film Arrival from Friday, October 6, to Sunday, October 8.

The Stage Fright Festival II requires your sacrifice!  Head to the 21ten theater (2110 SE 10th Ave in Portland, OR) for two weekends of 16 frightful events (running through Sunday, October 15).  Visit the link for all the details and advance ticket sales.

The Hallow Ian Horror Hour will present twelve horror shorts filmed in the Pacific Northwest on Fridays through October 27, with a marathon starting at 5 pm on Halloween.  You can view it on Seattle College Cable Television, or catch it on YouTube at 8 pm the day after the show airs.

The North Bend Theatre (125 Bendigo Blvd N in North Bend, WA) is showing John Landis' horror comedy classic An American Werewolf in London through Sunday, October 15.

Okay, hold off commenting until you read the entire post, please.  The Oregon Historical Society will present a one-time only screening of Deafula at Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) tonight at 6:30 pm.  Last shown at the Paramount Theatre in 1975, this Oregon made film was produced using a mix of both hearing and deaf actors, and is the first feature film performed completely in American Sign Language (an audio track and musical score is included for viewers not fluent in ASL).  Producer Gary Holstrom (who also plays Dracula in the film) will be present for a Q and A after the screening.

The director's cut of David Cronenberg's Videodrome is playing at The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) tonight at 7:30 pm.

The Comedy 101 series at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) gets into the spirit of the season with a screening of Shaun of the Dead tonight at 7:30 pm.

DreadFest 2023 takes place from 7 to 11 pm tonight at the North Bend Theatre (125 Bendigo Blvd N in North Bend, WA). Expect four hours of short, horror films from local, Seattle-area filmmakers and BEYOND!  Admission is FREE, so be sure to visit the snack bar a few times.

Writer/director Gregg Araki's cult film Nowhere will play at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) through Sunday, October 15.  Involving teens at wild party involving drugs, suicides, mutilations and alien abductions, Araki described the film as "Beverly Hills 90210 on acid."  So you know what to expect.

The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) will screen Neil Breen's sci fi thriller Cade: The Tortured Crossing tonight at 9:15 pm.
