Happy Halloween!!!

It's Almost TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

But that does mean THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR is almost over and that other holiday season, the one that started creeping into store back in September, will soon be in full swing.

But don't worry, Northwest Horror Fans.  If November is any indication, we'll still have plenty of things to do under The Shadow Over Portland. In fact, I've included the first half of November in this edition of the Weekly Update, so you can start planning out the rest of the year!  Sure, we won't have as much to chose from, but you won't have to miss one event to see another!!!

And fear not, The Shadow Over Portland will still be around, keeping you up to date on all the spooky events and genre happenings for the rest of 2016 and beyond.  So, if you are holding, or know of, a screening, con or other such event coming to the Pacific Northwest soon, or in 2017, email me at shadowoverportland@live.com and I'll get it on the site!

And remember, if you attend any of the events listed below, let the organizers know you read about it at The Shadow Over Portland!!

Oh, and...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Weird Wednesday at The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Portland, OR) presents the British cautionary tale Cosmic Monsters (AKA The Strange World of Planet X) tonight at 9:15 pm.  Starring Forrest Tucker (yes, the guy from F Troop), the film involves an alien warning humanity about the dangers of experimenting with ultra-sensitive magnetic fields.  And, of course, we don't listen and suddenly we get GIANT SPIDERS!  And a few other monstrous insects to boot.  Released the same year as The Crawling Eye (another British production), it looks like Tucker got a nice working vacation out of the deal.  As always, admission to the Weird Wednesday screening is FREE, but you must be 21 or older to attend.  Be sure to spend some of the money you save on admission at the concession stand and please, DO NOT bring outside food or drinks with you.  The Cosmic Monster will be quite upset if you do.  For more details, visit The Joy Cinema Website.

Thursday, October 27

I just don't know what's going on with RiffTrax these days.  First, they go after the Kaiju classic Mothra, but tonight, the group is going a bit too far for me as they mock the low budget classic, Carnival of Souls.  Sure, it might not be as polished as some other, bigger budgeted production, but this film is a classic, one that DOES NOT deserve mocking.  Take on The Killer Shrews (a personal favorite of mine) and I'd be laughing with you.  But I won't watch this travesty.  Hey, it's my blog and I say what I want.  Anyway, the live performance takes place tonight at 8 pm ET, 7 pm CT, and tape-delayed to 7 pm MT and 8 pm PT.  The event will be rebroadcasted on Monday, October 31 at 7:30 pm (local time).  To find a screening near you, and to purchase an advance ticket to either show, visit this Fathom Events website link.

------------

Of course, some movies deserve a good heckling, and The Wicker Man is one.  NO, I'm not talking the Robin Hardy classic.  I'm talking the ill-advised, rotten-to-the-core sequel starring Nicholas Cage. And The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) is bringing this cinematic turd to you in Hecklevision tonight at 9:30 pm.  Just text your jokes, comments and heckles, and your riff will appear on the screen.  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit The Hollywood Website

------------

If you missed Phantasm: Ravager earlier this month, The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) is bringing it back for an encore screening tonight at 9 pm.  This is the final chapter in the saga, and worth viewing on the big screen!  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit The Hollywood website.

The All Monsters Attack festival at the Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) screens Love in the Time of Monsters tonight at 7 pm.  Presented by Crypticon, this feature involved two sisters trying to survive, and save one's fiance, after he and a group of employees costumed as Bigfoot at a family lodge are exposed to toxic waste and become primal, psychotic killers.  The cast includes Doug Jones and Kane Hodder, and the website describes the film as "... a jaw-dropping, spine-ripping, gut-busting, heart-warming tale..."  Romance and monsters!  Sounds like fun!!  For more details and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Grand Illusion Website.

Okay, I know an anime convention might seem outside the darkness of The Shadow Over Portland, but I can say that's not the case.  Subgenres exist that would bring an evil smile to the face of any Northwest Horror Fan (and I've delved into a few), which is why I'm mentioning that Kumoricon, the anime convention held in Vancouver, WA, over the past five years, is moving across the river to The Oregon Convention Center (777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd) in Portland, OR this year.  No further details are available at this time, so keep checking back, or visit the Kumoricon website, later in 2016 for more details.
