A three day weekend just means more movies to check out!

It's the Fourth of July weekend in the US, and I hope you're lucky enough to be enjoying a three day weekend right now.  And whether you plan on a barbecue in the backyard, a nice picnic, or checking out a firework display, that extra day off means you have enough spare time to check out a film or two.  And this edition of the Weekly Update has you covered!

 As for home fireworks, remember to make sure they aren't banned in your area. And be careful if you decide to light some off.  You don't want to put your eye out!

Right now, the Portland Horror Film Festival has one more full days of films you can check out.  Phil Tippet's Mad God is in even more theaters, and Everything Everywhere All at Once is still in theaters, if you haven't seen it yet.  As for next week, the Geekenders bring Kill the Ripper to the Rio Theatre in Vancouver, BC, the Meadowlark Comic Con takes place in Grants Pass, OR, and two Power Rangers visit Rogue Toys in Happy Valley, OR.  You'll find details on these events, and so many more, down below!

The Beacon (4405 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA) will show Mario Bava's Blood and Black Lace tonight only at 7:30 pm. 

Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema at the Fairhaven Village Green (1207 10 St in Bellingham, WA) will show Jumanji: The Next Level tonight after sundown.

 

Joe Bob Briggs returns to the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) tonight at 7 pm for Joe Bob's Indoor Drive-In Geek-Out.  He'll be hosting a Cerebellum Double Feature, with The Brain and Brain Damage on the big screen.  I'm sure Joe Bob will agree when I say you should check it out.  As his last appearance sold out, get your tickets early!

Tonight only at 7 pm, the Darkside Cinema (215 SW 4th St in Corvallis, OR) and CMNYK's Sci Fi Extravaganza will present the Roger Corman cult classic The Little Shop of Horrors.  45 minutes of Drive-In treats will be screened before the feature.

 

Thursday, July 7

The Geekenders and Affair of Honor present Kill the Ripper, a darkly comic production about a trio of women who take on the murderer as he stalks the streets of Whitechapel.  The production runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC).

Tonight only at 7:30 pm, The Beacon (4405 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA) presents The Ghastly One: An Andy Milligan Double Feature, with biographer Jimmy McDonough.  The films are Bloodthirsty Butchers and Nightbirds.

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) and Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st Ave in Portland, OR; plays through Thursday, July 14) will screen David Lynch's Lost Highway tonight only at 6:30 pm.

It's a surf movie double feature of questionable taste tonight at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR).  First up is Surf II, a zombie comedy, starting at 7 pm.  Writer/director Randall Badat said, "We set out to make the most brain-dead movie of all time.  In that regard, I believe we succeeded."  Than catch Troma Entertainment's Surf Nazis Must Die, which Variety claims "...hasn't one redeeming feature," at 9 pm.  

Film restoration and distribution company Vinegar Syndrome takes over the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) tonight at 7:30 pm for a one-night surprise screening of a film from their extensive catalogue.  All I know about the film is it's a seldom seen mid-70s genre classic, and the event will be hosted by Theresa Mercado, programmer and host of Scream Screen.

 

Saturday, July 9

 

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) will present a 40th anniversary screening of Conan the Barbarian, in GLORIOUS 35mm, tonight only at 9 pm. 

Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema at the Fairhaven Village Green (1207 10 St in Bellingham, WA) will show the Disney animated feature Encanto tonight after sundown.

 

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) will show the animated film Shrek today and tomorrow at 3 pm.

 

The 80s sci fi classic Night of the Comet will be shown at 7 pm tonight only at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR).

 

The (I assume) cocaine-fueled fantasy Xanadu, with Gene Kelly in his final film performance putting most everyone to shame (even on roller skates), will be shown tonight only at the Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA; plays through Wednesday, July 13).  Just go and enjoy the excess that comes from filmmakers setting out to make a movie with WAY too many drugs available.  Again that's my assumption.  Take a look and judge for yourselves.

 

Film restoration and distribution company Vinegar Syndrome  returns to Movie Madness (4320 SE Belmont St in Portland, OR) for a pop-up shop from 11 am to 7 pm (or until sold out).  You'll find Blu-Rays, merch, collectible box sets and MORE!

 

Ack Ack, ACKACK ACK!  For those of you who don't speak Martian, it means head to LL Stub Stewart State Park (in Buxton, OR) as the Hollywood Theatre Summer Movies at Oregon State Parks, screens Mars Attacks!.  Admission is FREE, with free day-use parking after 7 pm.  The show starts at dusk.

 

The Meadowlark Comic Con takes place today at the Josephine County Fairgrounds (1451 Fairgrounds Rd in Grants Pass, OR).  Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, TV's Justice League, Sharktopus),  Eliza Roberts (Doctor Who: The Movie, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Schlock), ILM VFX artist C. Andrew Nelson, and Tuskin Raider actor Alan Fernades (Star Wars: A New Hope) are scheduled to appear.  You can follow the event on Facebook for updates.
