You'll find plenty of summer fun in this edition of the Weekly Update

To be honest, I didn't expect to be so overwhelmed by all the great Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy films hitting local theaters this summer.  And I'm not talking major blockbusters.  The indie film scene has been amazing, and some old favorites and cult classics are returning to the big screen as well.  And the local drive-ins and outdoor film screenings are showing some great movies as well.

But I've got more than just movies to share.  Below, you'll find an original stage production based on Jack the Ripper, some horror themed escape rooms, haunted tours, and where to apply if you want to work at a haunted attraction this October.  I've even included some news that will interest filmmakers in this edition.

All that said, I do want to apologize for the updates coming out on Saturday afternoon.  And that's not going to change any time soon.  I'm dealing with a schedule change at the day job, which has impacted the time I have to work on the site.  And my internal clock has yet to reset, so I'm still waking up at 5 am, no matter how late I stayed up, which is making me a bit tired most of the time.

And even I find a way to make things work, my schedule will change once again in mid-August.  But at least it will be permanent (I hope).

You know you just jinxed it, dude.  If this was a horror film, you'd be dead by now!

But that doesn't mean you have to wait for the update out to find out what's happening in your area.  Check out the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar, which I am still able to update every couple of days.  Not only is the last two weeks of July covered, you'll find events for the rest of the year, and even into summer 2023!

Well, back to the day job.  Everyone stay safe and I'll be back next week with more great things happening under The Shadow Over Portland!

If you'd like to support the site, please visit my Ko-fi page.  Thank you!

July, 2022

Saturday, July 16

The Buzz is BACK!  Wyrd War is bringing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 to the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) with Bill "Chop-Top" Moseley in attendance tonight only at 8 pm.  And, of course, expect a chili contest before the film, with prizes courtesy of Wyrd War.  I saw Moseley at his last appearence at the Hollywood, and he is an AMAZING person, and his Q and A was AWESOME, so get your tickets NOW!

The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) will show the Grande Dame Guignol classic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane tonight only at 10 pm.

The incredibly creepy Don't Look Now will be shown at 7:30 pm tonight only at The Beacon (4405 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA).

The Roger Corman cult classic Rock 'n' Roll High School will be shown at the Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA; plays through Wednesday, July 20).  Expect awesomeness from P. J. Soles and The Ramones, and an oversized rat.  If that didn't sell you on this flick, nothing will.

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will screen Clint Howard's slasher comedy Ice Cream Man tonight only at 7 pm.

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) presents a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture at midnight with the Clinton Street Cabaret.  Doors open at 11 pm.

The Olympia Film Society present The Rocky Horror Picture Show tonight, with Riff Raff's Street Rat at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE In Olympia, WA) at midnight.  Doors open at 11 pm.

Sunday, July 17

As the march to 100 movies at CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) continues, as the new owners of the theater celebrate their first anniversary.  To start the celebration, the theater will screen the Wachaowski's Speed Racer at 3 pm.  If you're into something bloodier, check out the 9:15 pm showing of Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky for some amazingly gory martial arts mayhem.  Be aware, it's not a double feature, which would have been AWESOME.  Still, it's worth checking both films out on the big screen.

The Olympia Film Society present Crimes of the Future, David Cronenberg's return to body horror, at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE In Olympia, WA) tonight at 7 pm, on Saturday, July 23, at 4 pm, on Thursday, July 28, at 4 pm, and on Sunday, July 31, at 4 pm.

It also plays at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) tonight at 9:30 pm.

This is Gwar has an encore screening at 1:45 pm today at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC.

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) will show 2001: A Space Odyssey in GLORUOUS 70mm today only at 2:30 and 7 pm.  I saw this when the theater first bought the film in 70mm, and this is the ONLY way to see it.  The stargate scene is HYPNOTIC!   DO NOT miss out!!

Michael Powell's 1960 Peeping Tom killed his career.  This story about a man filming the murders he commits was just too much for critics and the public to handle.  Guess Hitchcock was lucky Psycho came out after this film and prepped everyone for a new ear of horror films.  But now, you can check out Powell's 1960 classic on the big screen at 4:30 pm tonight only at The Beacon (4405 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA).

Monday, July 18

The march to 100 movies as CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR), as the new owners of the theater celebrate their first anniversary, continues as they screen the classic horror/comedy An American Werewolf in London at 7 pm, followed by the bloody Hong Kong bullet ballet Revanchist (hope I've got the right poster) at 9 pm.  It's not a double feature, but worth checking both out if you have Tuesday off.

Monster Monday at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will screen It: Chapter One, hosted by Buttercup Von Dingus, tonight at 9:30 pm.  Expect some trivia and prizes as well!

Tuesday, July 19

The march to 100 movies as CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR), as the new owners of the theater celebrate their first anniversary, continues with a screening of David Cronenberg's Videodrome at 7 pm, followed by Electric Dragon 80,000V.  If you haven't heard of this film, IMdB discribes it as "A violent, gitar-playing, elecrically charged boxer faces off against an electroic wizard half-merged with a metallic Buddha."  Oh yeah, that's one you HAVE to see.  Don't forget, this is not a double feature, but so worth your time.

The AWESOME carp-tastic rip off of George Lucas' classic, Starcrash, starring the lovely Caroline Munro in an amazing leather space bikini, invades the Darkside Cinema (215 SW 4th St in Corvallis, OR).  Showtime has yet to be announced.  Be aware, heckling is encouraged, but don't miss the chance to see this on the big screen, no matter how you feel about people talking in theaters.  It's crap-tastic and the visual effects are pretty solid (and amazingly cheesy).  And get out your checklist for awesome shout outs to Invaders from Mars, Ray Harryhausen and, obviously, Star Wars.  Yep, you need to see this one.

The Repressed Cinema series at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) will show a restored version of Andy Milligan's sexploitation film Seeds (AKA Seeds of Sin) tonight only at 7:30 pm.  Author Jimmy McDonough will be in attendance, with new paperback editions of his Milligan biography The Ghastly One for sale.

Wednesday, July 20

The march to 100 movies as CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR), as the new owners of the theater celebrate their first anniversary, continues with Live, Die Repeat (AKA Edge of Tomorrow), a Tom Cruise film I have to admit was sunk by the advertising campaign.  It's worth checking out, and plays at 7 pm, followed by the harrowing cyberpunk film Upgrade at 9 pm.  Just a reminder, this is not a double feature, but worth checking out on the big screen.

BECU Drive-In Movies at Marymoor Park will show Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at Marymoor Park (6046 W Lake Sammamish Parkway NE in Redmond, WA) tonight at 9:15 pm.  For more details and to buy tickets, visit the link above.

Thursday, July 21

The thriller Losing Addison, about a twin losing his psychic conection with his brother, will play at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) tonight only at 7:30 pm.  The film was shot entirely in the Portland and, aside from actor Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), features a local cast and crew.

The march to 100 movies as CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR), as the new owners of the theater celebrate their first anniversary, ends today with a 4:30 pm screening of Wes Craven's masterpiece The People Under the Stairs.  Given as Jordan Peele has plans to remake the film, it seems appropriate to show this before the premier of Nope at 7 pm.

PAMCUT brings Jennifer Kent's  horror film about grief and the issues it creates, The Babadook, to Cinema Unbound Outdoor Movies at the Bridge Lot at OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave in Portland, OR) tonight at 9 pm.  Be aware, the film contains some very telegraphed, but horrific, violence towards animals.  It's not Cannibal Holocaust, but it's pretty horrible.

Jordan Peele's latest film, Nope, opens tonight at Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st Ave in Portland, OR; scheduled through Thursday, July 28), CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR; scheduled through Thursday, July 28), the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St in Bellingham, WA; scheduled through Sunday, July 24), the Laurelhurst Theater (2735 E Burnside St in Portland, OR; scheduled through Thursday, July 28), the St Johns Twin Cinema (8704 N Lombard St in Portland, OR; scheduled through Thursday, July 28), the Sandy Cinema (16605 Champion Way in Sandy, OR; scheduled through Thursday, July 28), Studio One Theaters (3945 SE Powell Blvd in Portland, OR; scheduled through Thursday, July 28), the Yelm Cinemas (201 Prairie Park Lane SE in Yelm, WA; scheduled through Thursday, July 28), the Broadway Metro (888 Willamette St in Eugene, OR; plays through Thursday, July 21), and SIFF Cinema Uptown (511 Queen Anne Ave N in Seattle, WA; scheduled through Thursday, July 28).

Friday, July 22

The 5th Avenue Cinema (510 SW Hall St in Portland, OR) will show Miguel Llanso's sci fi comedy Jesus Shows You the Way to the Highway through Sunday, July 24.  The story of two CIA agents trapped in a VR world while attempting to nuetralize a computer virus called "Soviet Union" might seem straight forward, but the preview looks at times like The Matrix crossed with The Three Stoogies.  And yes, that is 60s Batman on the poster.  Be aware, this is a cash only venue.

If video rental or cable viewings of The Gate started your horror obsession, you can check it out on the big screen at 8 pm tonight only at The Beacon (4405 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA)

The anime sci fi classic Akira will be shown at the Central Cinema (1411 21st Ave in Seattle, WA; plays through Thursday, July 28).

You can catch Cannibal! The Musical on the big screen this week at the Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA; plays through Tuesday, July 26).

Saturday, July 23

A new 4K restoration of David Lynch's Lost Highway will be shown at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) tonight at 10:30 pm.

VHS Uber Alles presents Murderin' Maniac Movie Night at 10 pm tonight at The Grand Illusion (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA).  If you're wondering what the movie is, well, they ain't saying.  But it's never been released on DVD and is called a "criminally inept classic!"  You've been warned.

The Whiteside Theatre (361 SW Madison Ave in Corvallis, OR) will screen Disney's animated film Big Hero 6 today only at 3 pm.  Doors open at 2 pm.

The Hollywood Theatre Summer Movies at Oregon State Parks continues tonight with a screening of  Back to the Future Part II tonight at Milo McIver State Park (located in Estacada, OR).  Admission is FREE, with free day-use parking after 7 pm.  The show starts at dusk.

Find out if Earth Girls are Easy, as PAMCUT brings this sci fi musical comedy, starring Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis and Jim Carrey, to Cinema Unbound Outdoor Movies at the Bridge Lot at OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave in Portland, OR) tonight at 9 pm.

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) presents a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture designed for virgins tonight at midnight.  Doors open at 11 pm.

The Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA) will screen The Rocky Horror Picture with a shadowcast by The Denton Delinquents tonight at 10 pm.  Doors open and pre-show starts at 9 pm.
