13 Haunted Houses

The nights are getting longer and colder, and the desire to curl up with a hot drink and spooky tome is feeling more prominent with readers of this site.  So I offer up 13 Haunted Houses as a way to make you suspect of your current dwelling.

Be advised, as is the policy of this site, I was offered a review copy of this collection.  Just want to let you know, as I think I missed mentioning it in my last film review.  It happens, but I feel you need to know when I'm offered a free read/viewing.

13 Haunted Houses lives up to its name, delivering delicious, vicious ghosts looking to extract revenge on anyone who dares enter their doorway.  But what makes this collection unique is that it doesn't rely on creaky, old abandoned houses (though it has a few) to make you fear the groans of your dwelling.  It includes haunted lighthouses, Air BnBs and more.  And, while it might be more graphic than you'd expect, most of the stories deliver on the chills.

I loved the agoraphobia tale in this collection, as the protagonist is stuck in a condo out to get him.  The same with the haunted Air BnB, when the central character returns to find out what happened to her sister during their last visit.  Oh, and the story when a man is trying to keep his daughter from passing away by visiting the childhood haunted house that keeps spirits alive is really good.  Be aware, the ghost haunting this collection are not rattling chains and creating a spooky atmosphere. They're out for blood and are happy to show it.

13 Haunted Houses is a perfect book for this time of year.  Settle in with your comfy sweatpants, turn on the living room lamp, and don't be surprised if you have goosebumps when you hear a creak or groan in the house.
