Here's some great things to do, if you don't mind getting out in the rain

It appears a significant part of the Pacific Northwest is under an atmospheric river.  And, after a drenching bike ride home last night (after my phone informed me of the chance of "light" rain), I wasn't surprised to hear several rivers, including the Columbia, might reach flood levels this weekend.

 The Monday morning commute could get interest, is all I'm saying.

Perhaps, like me, you'll find this the perfect time to curl up on the couch, in your most comfy sweats, with a good book and a hot cup of tea.  But if you're more interested in getting out, this edition of the Weekly Update is loaded with plenty of great things that will ease any case of cabin fever.

But this Weekly Update has more than just events happening this week.  First, deluxe festival tickets, both in-person and streaming, for the Portland Horror Film Festival (which takes place from June 29 to July 3) are now on sale.  Not sure if you can attend or stream the festival, you can show your support by purchasing a swag package by Friday, June 17.  By the way, the swag bundle supply is limited, so make your purchase soon!  You'll find the link below.

Haunted attractions are starting to post opening dates, and ScareGrounds PDX is now hiring for the 2022 Halloween season.  If you want to help build the haunted attraction, be a monster or work behind the screams, I mean scene, you'll find link below.

Also, be sure to check out the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar, were you'll find details on movies, festivals, cons and MUCH MORE taking place through 2022.  Heck, I've even have a few haunted attractions listed, as well as a few events taking place in 2023, giving you plenty of time to plan ahead!

One last thing.  I'm sure you've noticed that I'm listing locally owned theaters showing first run films on the site now.  Personally, I miss the days when such theaters would show second-run and classic films, but that audience has dwindled, as streaming services enticed many to stay on their couch.  So, after so many local theaters have made the switch, I want to help get the word out, so you can avoid the mega-chain monstrosity.  So if you know a locally owned theater in your area that hasn't shown up on the site, please let me know.  I'll take care of the rest.

The Bleedingham Horror Film Festival is taking submissions through September 1, 2022.  The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23, in Bellingham, WA.

Well, he said he'd be back!  The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will show The Terminator tonight at 8:20 pm, followed by Terminator 2: Judgement Day at 10:30 pm.  And yes, they are offering a double feature ticket!

The insane-in-all-the-right-ways Japanese horror film House (AKA Hausu) will be shown at the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St in Bellingham, WA) tonight at 10 pm.

The PAMCUT Michelle Yeoh Mini-Fest continues today at noon with a newly restored version of Johnnie To's crazy mix of superheroes and supernatural evils The Heroic Trio, starring Yeoh, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui.  The screening takes place at the Portland Art Museum Whitsell Auditorium (1219 SW Park Ave in Portland, OR).  The film is in Cantonese with English subtitles.  

 

The PAMCUT Michelle Yeoh Mini-Fest concludes today at 3 pm with a newly restored version of Executioners,  the sequel to The Heroic Trio.  The screening takes place at the Portland Art Museum Whitsell Auditorium (1219 SW Park Ave in Portland, OR).  The film is in Cantonese with English subtitles.

The Portland Horror Trivia Massacre starts at 7:30 pm tonight at Home, A Bar (719 SE Morrison St in Portland, OR).

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will show the religious horror/thriller The Righteous tonight at 6:30 pm.

I'm not sure if this should be included on the calendar (I've yet to see the film), but I'm including the Daniels film Swiss Army Man, the latest in the CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) celebration of A24 films for two reasons.  First, the Daniels made the breakout indie multiverse film Everything Everywhere All at Once, and any film starring Daniel Radcliffe (the Harry Potter franchise) as a farting corpse I can't help but post on the site.  Plays tonight only at 7:30 pm.

Burlynomicon-A Darkly Decadent Burlesque Revue returns to The Coffin Club (421 SE Grand in Portland, OR) tonight for another spellbinding show.  Doors open at 7 pm, the show starts at 8 pm.  Advance tickets are recommended for this 21 and older event.

Wednesday, June 15

The last film in the CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) celebration of A24 films that fits the genre niche reported by The Shadow Over Portland is Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse, which plays tonight only at 7:30 pm.

Friday Night Frights at the Blue Mouse Theatre (2611 N Proctor St in Tacoma, WA) will screen the Troma superhero flick The Toxic Avenger tonight at 10 pm.

If you're looking for a film to take Dad to on Father's Day weekend, head to Central Cinema (1411 21st Ave in Seattle, WA) for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, playing through Thursday, June 23.

It's all Indy, all night at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) with Raiders of the Lost Ark at 6:25 pm, The Temple of Doom at 8:45 pm, and The Last Crusade at 11 pm (I suspect Crystal Skull was left out due to time, or nobody wanted the marathon to end on a sour note).  You can buy tickets for a single film, or save big by purchasing a Marathon Ticket.

Faerieworlds Music and Arts Festival takes place through Sunday, June 19, at the Cuthbert Amphitheater in Alton Baker Park (2300 Leo Harris Pkway in Eugene, OR).  You find a list of performers and a link to purchase tickets at the site.  You can also get details at the Facebook Page.

The Washington State Summer Con takes place from June 17 to 19 at the Washington State Fair and Events Center (110 9th Ave SE in Puyallup, WA).  Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars movies), Jen Taylor (Cortana in the Halo games), Steve Downes (The Master Chief in the Halo games) and Robert Patrick (T2, The X Files) are scheduled to attend.  You can follow the event on Facebook.

Saturday, June 18

The Whiteside Theatre (361 SW Madison Ave in Corvallis, OR) will screen the Pixar film Luca today only at 3 pm.  I assume this film about fish people is more family friendly than anything H. P. Lovecraft wrote about.

VHS Uber Alles presents a Cyborg vs. Cyborg Fight Night in GLORIOUS VHS at 9 pm tonight at the Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA).  Don't know the title of the film, but a plot summery is available at the link.  And it's NEVER been released on DVD!

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) screens The Rocky Horror Picture show at midnight with a shadowcast by the Clinton Street Cabaret.  Doors open at 11 pm.

Fathom Events brings John Carpenter's The Thing back to theaters nationwide for the film's 40th anniversary.  The film plays today, and on Wednesday, June 22, and includes the Terror Takes Shape documentary.  Click on the link above to find a theater near you showing the film.
