The snow delayed Weekly Update is finally here!

Sorry to be late with this edition of the Weekly Update, but the past few days have been rather busy.  I was out with friends when the snow started on Tuesday, but wasn't expecting to step onto the exterior set of Snowpiercer after a nice dinner and a few drinks.

The commute to work the past few days has been fun as well.  Dealing with slippery sidewalks and mass transit delays is never easy.  Add into that the packs of Bigfoots coming down from the hills to check out downtown, and getting to work turned into quite an adventure.  Not that the Bigfoots were nasty or anything, just rather playful and deadly accurate with snowballs.  And they throw them HARD!

At least they feel bad when they knock you off your feet.

Though we don't have anymore snow forecast for the rest of the week, I'm sure you've noticed that the roads are very slick and will likely remain so for until early next week.  Several theaters have closed or cancelled late screenings, so before you head to an event, please call ahead and make sure it's still happening.

And watch out for a barrage of Bigfoot launched snowballs.

Be sure to check out the Horror Calendar, as I've added new guests appearing at Crypticon and the Emerald City Comic Con.  Also, I have dates for the 22nd Annual H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival in October and the GeekCraft Expo PDX 2017, as well as other conventions, screenings and events you'll want to add onto your calendar.

Remember, if you have, or know of, a horror/sci fi/fantasy event happening in the Pacific Northwest, email me at shadowoverportland@live.com and I'll add it to my site.

And, should you attend any of the events listed here, let the organizers know you read about it at The Shadow Over Portland!

The Ball is back!  The Olympia Film Society Fright Club presents a screening of the 4K remastered Phantasm tonight at 9 pm at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave in Olympia, WA).  This restored version film looks BEAUTIFUL and needs to be seen on the big screen.  Tickets are $9.  For more details, visit the Olympia Film Society website.

------------

The McMenamins Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan St in Portland, OR) screens the Alfred Hitchcock classic, Psycho, this evening at 5:30 pm as part of the Hitchcock Film Festival.  Sure, Hitchcock made other masterpieces (many of which are being screened during the festival), but Psycho is (in my mind) a special case.  It pushed boundaries and broke taboos, some as simple as showing a toilet flushing onscreen, and the chance to see it on the big screen shouldn't be missed.  The film will also be screened on Saturday, January 21, and Sunday, January 22.  For more details on this screening, as well as other films in the Hitchcock Film Festival and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Facebook Event Page.

Friday, January 20

------------

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman plays at The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) through January 26.  Allison Hayes is turned into a giant by a spaceman, and tears through the town on the trail of her unfaithful husband.  It's just too bad the poster's depiction of her highway rampage isn't on the screen, but the film is still a blast and will be in GLORIOUS 35mm!!  Showtimes have yet to be announced, so check back here, or at The Academy Theater website, later in the month for more details.

------------

Russ Meyer's tale of violent women causing mayhem in the California desert, Faster Pussycat!  Kill!  Kill! screens tonight at 11:55 pm at the Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway in Vancouver, BC).  Martial artist Tura Satana became an icon as the leader of three sadistic go-go dancers out to steal a hidden fortune from a crippled man and his sons.  Tickets are $8 in advance, or if you show up in costume, $10 at the door.  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Rio Theatre website.

Saturday, January 21

A classic of the pre-Code era, Rocket Sci-Fi Matinee presents Island of Lost Souls today at noon at the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St in Bellingham, WA).  Presented by Rocket Donuts, this version of The Island of Dr. Moreau isn't entirely faithful to Wells' novel, but it deals with the subject matter in a manner some would say is shocking for a film from the 30s.  Featuring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi, you should check this one out on the big screen!  For more details, visit the Pickford Film Center website.

You'd be "Stupid!  Stupid!" to miss a chance to see the Ed Wood "classic," Plan 9 from Outer Space, on the big screen at The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) through January 5.  Sure, it's considered by some to be the worst movie ever made, but that's not true (trust me!).  It might be silly, full of bad dialog, bad acting and bad Fake Shemp Lugosi moments, but the movie has a certain charm and much more energy than something like The Creeping Terror.  Showtimes have yet to be announced, so check back, or visit The Academy Theater website, later in the month for more details.

The Olympia Film Society presents Anna Biller's The Love Witch at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE in Olympia, WA) through January 5.  Showtimes vary, so visit the Olympia Film Society website for more details.

The Creeping Terror will finally get its Weird Wednesday screening tonight at The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR).  It took the Portland Snowpocalypse 2016 to keep this low budget (and I mean LOOOOOOW!) turkey of an alien invasion flick from being screening in December, but it's a New Year and the shag carpet covered monster from space has finally landed.  The show starts at 9:15 pm and admission is FREE, but you must be 21 or older to attend.  Remember to open your wallet at the concession stand and do your part to help The Joy keep Wednesdays WEIRD!  And just to let you know, no outside food or drink is allowed in the theater, as The Creeping Terror doesn't like such behavior and will find you... eventually.  For more details, visit the Joy Cinema website.

Friday, January 6

The splat-stick Nazi zombie classic, Dead Snow, screens tonight at the Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway in Vancouver, BC) tonight at 11:30 pm.  A group of medical students in a remote, mountainous area of Norway, make the BIG mistake of picking up some gold that was taken by Nazis, and now their reanimated corpses want it back.  Of course, mayhem ensues.  The film is presented with English subtitles, but the gore translates to all languages!  Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door.  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Rio Theatre website.

Saturday, January 7

------------

Curious Gallery 2017 runs today and tomorrow (Sunday, January 8) at the Crowne Plaza Portland Downtown Convention Center (1441 NE 2nd Ave in Portland, OR).  Harkening back to a time when private citizens would form their own collections of scientific specimens and cultural artifacts, this event is designed to increase awareness and appreciation of wonder cabinets (wunderkammern) through exhibits, presentations, workshops and other events.  For more details, visit the Facebook Event Page or the Curious Gallery website.

Sunday, January 8
