The weather has been rather indecisive over the past few weeks, ranging from an apocalyptic heat storm to cloudy skies and chilly temperatures in the space of a day. It's as if the regional weather god has lost their calendar and is currently winging it. I'm expecting a storm full of sharks any day now.
Because the rain isn't keeping people from
moving into the area. This might do it.
But the weather shouldn't keep Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy fans from heading out, as this edition of the Weekly Update is full of great films, festivals, conventions and performances to make you brave whatever the weather! Check out the Portland Horror Film Festival next weekend at The Hollywood Theatre in Portland, OR, or the Lilac City Comic Con in Spokane, WA. Alien: Covenant and Colossal are still playing in several theaters, Jaws starts on Friday at The Academy Theater in Portland, OR, and the Rio Theatre in Vancouver, BC presents Lord of the Schwings this weekend. The Invincible Czars from Austin, Texas are touring the area with an original live music accompaniment for 1922's Nosferatu at 7 pm, followed by a screening of 1920's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at several local theaters. Mikes Movie Riff Off presents a screening of the Conan rip-off The Barbarians tonight at 8 pm at the Acme Tavern (1310 Tacoma Ave S in Tacoma, WA). Use your cellphone to text your riffs on the film upon the screen as the "Barbarian Brothers" (bodybuilders Peter and David Paul) battle an evil tyrant in this film directed by Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust). Weird Wednesday at The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR) presents a cautionary tale to future archaeologist as the theater uncovers the Giant from the Unknown tonight at 9:15 pm. You never know when digging for ancient artifacts will lead to the reanimation of pissed off, giant Conquistador who's out for blood! The film features heavyweight boxer Buddy Baer (and uncle of Max Baer, Jr., Jethro in the Beverly Hillbillies TV show) and make up by Jack Pierce (of Universal Monster fame). Part of the Projekt Records Movies in the Dark series, the film centers on a man who wakes up to find the police in his room. He is told he is on trial, but no one tells him the charges, and he faces a Kafkaesque nightmare which could lead to his conviction without a chance to defend himself. I usually don't list Hollywood blockbusters on the site, as studios have a advertising budget big enough to get everyone's attention. But The Mummy is the start of the Dark Universe, bringing the classic Universal Monsters back into the theaters, and that deserves mention on the calendar. Here's hoping it's better than Dracula Untold, the studio's first attempt to revive the classic monster franchise. Just check local listings, I'm sure it's at a theater near you.
