More Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Events are coming back!

Sorry I missed last week, but had a few personal issues I was dealing with, and never got a chance to get back to The Shadow Over Portland office.  So I missed the chance to let you know the Portland Horror Trivia Massacre started up again last Tuesday at Home A Bar (719 SE Morrison St in Portland, OR), but I'll be sure to keep you posted on the next trivia night.

They're backkkkkk..  Oh, wait, wrong movie!

The big news in Tacoma is Friday Night Frights will start scaring movie goers once again in July, at the Blue Mouse Theater (2611 N Proctor St in Tacoma, WA).  I've got no further information at this time, but I'll update you as soon as I get more details.

More scary stuff in theaters is always a welcome sign!

Over at the Hollywood Theatre (4211 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR), the re-opening celebration will include screenings of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Tenet this July in GLORIOUS 70mm!  As soon as I get dates, I'll pass the details to you.

That's the best gift the Hollywood Theatre could give us!

In other Hollywood Theatre news, the Portland Horror Film Festival will be at the theater this year.  However, as the Hollywood isn't opening until July 2, the festival will not start on June 23, as announced earlier.  As soon as the new dates are available, I'll post them on the site.

Film festivals are BACK, and I CAN'T WAIT!!

Rounding out this look at things to come, I'm busy adding the genre films to be screened in the Northwest Film Center series, Cinema Unbound Summer Movies and Open-Air Experiences to the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar.  I should have it updated this weekend, so be sure to check it out!

A couple of small requests before getting to the events happening this week.  If you know of any local venues in the Pacific Northwest that are open and should be included in the Weekly Update and Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar, email me at shadowoverportland@live.com with the details and I'll add it to the site.  Remember, getting an event listed on the site is, as always, FREE!

Also, if you enjoy reading The Shadow Over Portland's content and want to support the site, consider buying me a Ko-Fi.  Thank you, and let's get to the Weekly Update!

Please don't forget to click the links provided for all the information on the screening you want to attend, including Covid restrictions, showtimes, and advance ticket purchases (often required).

At the Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA), George Romero's lost film, The Amusement Park, plays Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 11 to 13, with an exclusive Q and A with George's wife, Suzanne Romero, make up effect wizard Greg Nicotero, author Daniel Kraus (who finished Romero's novel The Living Dead) and moderator Sam Zimmerman, curator at SHUDDER.

Who let the sharks out?  Why, the Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR), as the theater is screening the 1975 summer blockbuster classic Jaws through Monday, and the 1983 not-so-classic Jaws 3D tonight and tomorrow in GLORIOUS 3D!

A Quiet Place Part II continues at the Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA), the Granada 3 Theatre (1311 Adams Ave in La Grande, OR), the 99W Drive In (3110 Portland Rd in Newberg, OR) right after 1986's Top Gun, and the following McMenamins locations: the Anderson School Theater (18607 Bothell Way NE, Bothell, WA), Bagdad Theater and Pub (3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) through Tuesday, June 15, Power Station Theater (2126 SW Halsey St in Troutdale, OR), the Old St. Francis Theater (700 NW Bond St in Bend, OR), and the St. Johns Theater and Pub (8203 N Ivanhoe St in Portland, OR).

The latest Disney villain origin movie, Cruella, continues at the Liberty Theatre (315 NE 4th Ave in Camas, WA), and the McMenamins Grand Lodge Theater (3505 Pacific Ave in Forest Grove, OR).

At McMenamins Kennedy School (5736 NE 33rd Ave in Portland, OR), you can watch either the latest animated Disney film, Raya and the Last Dragon, or the MUCH less kid friendly Mortal Kombat reboot.

In more dragon movie news, the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will screen the family fantasy classic The Neverending Story on Saturday, June 12, at 1:30 pm.

Also at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) is The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday, July 12.  Doors open at 8 pm, with a preshow starting at 8:30 and the movie starting at 9 pm, but attendance is limited to 100 people inside.  Tickets must be purchased in advance, so visit the link for ticket sales and Covid rules.

That's all I've got for this week.  But I'll be back in seven days with more great Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Events happening under The Shadow Over Portland!

It's beginning to feel like we'll have Halloween this year!

Covid-19 restrictions are starting to loosen up on a weekly basis and, while I think it's a bit early to let our guard down too much, it's nice to think that film festivals and conventions are going to be back by the end of the year.  And we might have a Halloween this year!

And that's a reason to applaud!

And this edition of the Weekly Update has some great movies for Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans in the Pacific Northwest. Not all venues are open yet, but it's looking more likely to happen very soon.  Until then, enjoy this list of great movies playing under The Shadow Over Portland!

I do have one favor to ask.  If you know of a local venue that's open, or will be opening soon, send me an email at shadowoverportland@live.com with a link to their website, so I can include them in future editions of the Weekly Update and in the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar which I'll be updating soon.  Thanks!

Sorry I'm so late to file this edition of the Weekly Update, but to paraphrase Dr. Ian Malcom, life finds a way to mess with your schedule.  And it did for me this week.

And having said that, I am going to use this clickbait image.  Yep, I will sink that low.

But my tardiness doesn't mean I don't have some great Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy films to share with Pacific Northwest Fans.  And you'll want to visit the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar later in the week, as I'll be adding the theaters showing A Quite Place Part II and Cruella.  Or just wait for the next edition of the Weekly Update.  But I will warn you, while I hope to have it out before Friday, I get my second Covid-19 shot next week, so we'll see if I have a severe enough reaction to keep me away from the office.

Until next time, everyone stay safe, keep wearing your masks and practicing social distancing, get vaccinated and I hope to see you at a convention or film festival this summer!

The Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon continues at the McMenamins Kennedy School Theater (5736 NE 33rd Ave in Portland, OR).  Or you could watch Scott Pilgrim vs. the World on Saturday, May 15, only at 7 pm.  Follow the link for showtimes, advance ticket sales and Covid rules.

Raya and the Last Dragon is also at the Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR) through Sunday, May 16, along with The Terminator (through Monday, May 17) and Flash Gordon on Saturday, May 15.  The link will get you to showtimes and advance ticket sales.

Also, the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will bring back The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 9 pm Saturdays, but attendance is limited to 50 people inside.  Tickets must be purchased in advance, so visit the link for ticket sales and Covid rules.

The Granada 3 Theatre (1311 Adams Ave in La Grande, OR) is showing Spiral: From the Book of Saw this week.  Click on the link for showtimes, advance ticket sales and Covid rules.

Over at the 99W Drive-In (3110 Portland Rd in Newberg, OR), you can catch The Resort, about a group of investigators heading to an abandoned resort in Hawaii to explore the legend of the Half-Faced Girl (do I need to say things go terribly wrong?) after the Jason Stathan action film Wrath of Man.  The films play through Sunday, May 16.  Visit the Facebook page for details.

2020's Unearth is still screening on the Kiggins Theatre Virtual Screening Room.  The cast includes scream queen Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Creepshow), P. J. Marshall (American Horror Story) and Rachel McKeon (Jessica Jones), and concerns two neighboring farm families finding their relationships strained when on leases their land to a natural gas company.  If you're wondering if something is unleashed, well, the tag line does call it a "fracking horror story."  Click on the link for more details.

And we're open again! Sort of....

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 here in Oregon have dipped just below the level set by the state, allowing restrictions to ease on restaurants, theaters and gyms once again.  So, as Oregon is now at a "high risk" status, venues shuttered last week can reopen as of today, though with limited capacity on indoor seating.  It's like being on a carousel.  You are always moving forward, but are traveling in a circle, continually ending up back where you started.

Hurry, hurry.  Step up to the COVID carousel!
You'll have the time of your life, but it won't be fun for anyone!!

We can get off this crazy ride, with a little effort on everyone's part.  So keep wearing your mask, continue social distancing and get vaccinated as soon as you can, and maybe we can meet up at a conventions or a film festival later this summer.

As always, you can check the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar for all the events coming to the Pacific Northwest.  And I'll keep updating it as we (hopefully) get past this pandemic and more venues open up.

But for now, let's look at what's happening in local theaters, as some great genre films are still out there.

The Disney film Raya and the Last Dragon is back in theaters, including the Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR).  McMenamins locations: Bagdad Theater and Pub (3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR),  the Anderson School Theater (18607 Bothell Way NE in Bothell, WA), the Kennedy School Theater (5736 NE 33rd Ave in Portland, OR), the Old St. Francis Theater (700 NW Bond St in Bend, OR), the Olympic Club Theater (112 N Tower Ave in Centralia, WA), the Power Station Theater at Edgefield (2126 SW Halsey in Troutdale, OR), and the St Johns Theater (8203 N Ivanhoe St in Portland, OR).

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) is also showing Tetsuo: The Iron Man through Sunday, May 9.  Tickets must be purchased in advance, so visit the link for ticket sales, showtimes and Covid rules.

Over at the 99W Drive-In (3110 Portland Rd in Newberg, OR), you can catch the dystopian sci fi film Chaos Walking, starring Tom Holland (the latest Spider-Man) and Daisey Ridley (Rey in the latest Star Wars trilogy).  The film is playing with the Jason Stathan action film Wrath of Man.  The films play Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8.  Visit the Facebook page for details.

On Wednesday, May 12, the Whiteside Theatre (361 SW Madison Ave in Corvallis, OR) will screen the fantasy classic Legend, starring Tim Curry in amazing devil makeup, at 7 pm tonight.  Purchase your tickets online (required) the Whiteside Theatre website.

Looking ahead a bit, the Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA) has announced it will show A Quiet Place Part II on the big screen starting Thursday, May 27.  Visit this link for showtimes, advance ticket sales and Covid rules.

And that's what I have for this edition of the Weekly Update.  Hope we'll be seeing more events coming for Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans in the very near future, so stay tuned!
