Yeah, it's the "most wonderful time of the year" for many folks, with festive displays, Peanuts specials and warm, fuzzy feelings.  But, I assume if you read this blog, you want to know where to get your chills, and not from the dropping temperatures!  And I have the creepy offerings from around the Northwest to help keep this holiday season SCARY!  Check out the offerings I've found under The Shadow Over Portland!

Continuing

Good Night Mommy, continues to screen at The Laurelhurst Theater and Pub (2735 E Burnside St) in Portland, OR, tonight.  As a pair of twin brothers greet their mother after cosmetic surgery, the suspect the woman entering their home is their true parent.  And, as expect, things start to go bad from there.  This screening is for those 21 or older only.  Visit The Laurelhust Theater website for more details.

Tacoma Horror Fans, you still have time to find out about all sort of critters to make Farmer Vincent's fritters.  And we aren't talking roadkill here, folks, unless you're talking people ran off the road and.....   Oh hell, I'm not giving it away.  Just head to the Blue Mouse Theater (2611 N Proctor St) in Tacoma, WA, as Friday Night Frights presents a screening of the meat lovers classic Motel Hell.  This dark comedy horror film is under-appreciated even to this day, but the dark humor and horrific images are sure to win you over.  The show starts at 10 pm and tickets are only $5.  If you haven't seen this one, you need to check it out.  Visit the Facebook Event Page for more details.

I Am Thor, the documentary of a heavy metal artist's rise, fall and rebirth, screens at The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd) in Portland, OR, tonight at 9:30 pm.  I'm including this on the Horror Calendar as Thor also starred in the camp classic Rock n' Roll Nightmare (seriously, you NEED TO SEE THIS, as it is spectacular cheesy fun) and Zombie Nightmare.  And, his appearance at The Hollywood Theatre a few years ago was AWESOME!  Advance tickets for the 9:30 pm showing, and more details on the film and Thor's career, are available at The Hollywood Theatre website.

The Wes Craven classic, A Nightmare on Elm Street, screens tonight at 9 pm at The Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE) in Olympia, WA.  Presented as part of the Olympic Film Society Friday Night Fright series, this is one film I shouldn't have to explain why you need to see it on the big screen.  Tickets are $9, $6 for OFS members.  Doors open at 8:30 pm, with the show starting at 9 pm.  Tickets (if available) can be purchased a half hour before the show, and the Mezzanine Lounge will be open to those 21 or older (and yes, ID is required).  For more details, visit the link.

Leave it to The Grindhouse Film Festival to bring a festive smorgasbord to the Thanksgiving table.  Tonight only, at 7:30 pm, The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd) in Portland, OR, screens a rare 35mm print of I Drink Your Blood.  Hippies, LSD, and rabies laced meat pies is the right recipe for mayhem to ensue!  Be sure to arrive early and enjoy the 35mm trailers screening before the film.  Advance tickets are $8 and available at The Hollywood Theatre website.

The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway) in Tigard, OR, presents another classic Weird Wednesday offering, featuring  Christopher Lee in City of the Dead (AKA Horror Hotel).  A tale of modern witchcraft that contain some moments that might leave you wondering why the characters act the way they do, but the sets and cinematography is wonderful.  Just roll with the stupid characters and you'll have a great time!  No showtimes yet, but Weird Wednesday screenings start between 9 and 9:30 pm.  Admission is FREE, so spend some extra money at the snack bar!  You must be over 21 years of age to attend.  Get more details as they are available here, or at The Joy Cinema website.

Yipee Kay-yay, Motherf....  Well, you know the rest.  We have our first Die Hard screening of the holiday season at the 7th Street Theatre (313 7th St) in Hoquiam, WA.  And, as most readers know, I always promote what I consider the greatest HOLIDAY FILM EVER MADE!  Sure, I love me some Jack Frost (NOT the family friendly version) and Silent Night, Deadly Night, but Die Hard is the perfect holiday story, as John McClain wins his way back into Holly's heart, and his family's embrace, by BLASTING TERRORISTS IN THE FACE!  Sure, it's not a horror film, but it's one of the best 80s action films ever filmed, with some AMAZING practical stunts, so don't miss the chance to see it on the big screen!!  The film plays tonight at 7:30 pm tonight and on Saturday, November 28.  For more details, visit the 7th St. Theatre website.

Also at The Hollywood Theatre tonight is the winner of the November This Is Your Theater vote, The City of Lost Children. This film is beautiful, and will be a visual treat in GLORIOUS 35mm!  Concerning an evil scientist compensating for his inability to dream by stealing dreams from children, he is only able to harvest nightmares from his terrified captives.  A circus strongman, added by others, attempts to free his younger brother from the madman and end his evil reign.  Oh, and Ron Perlman is the strongman!  Come on, what could be better?  As of November 19, only 14 more advance tickets need to be purchased to "tip" the screening, allowing it to be shown.  And you know if it "tips" the screening will likely sell out, so buy your tickets now.  More details are available at the link.

December, 2015

December 1

OH MY GOD!  B-Movie Bingo returns to The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd) in Portland, OR, returns with a slice of CHEESY GOODNESS, I Come in Peace.  An alien has landed on Earth and is using humans as a otherworldly narcotic factory.  Only tough guy cop Dolph Lundgren and his partner, played by Brian Benben (no, seriously; I'm not joking here) can keep the alien drug dealer from returning to the stars and starting a grand harvest here on Earth.  I first saw this film on HBO back in the days in OH, IT IS SO AMAZINGLY CHEESY.  And, you can call out BINGO on your ticket and know you beat out everyone else.  But seriously, this movie is so much fun, you might miss a few troupes on your card.  But that shouldn't matter if you're having fun!  The film screens at 7:30 pm, and you can find more details, along with advance ticket sales, at the link.

December 4

The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark) in Portland, OR, is screening Edward Scissorhands through Thursday, December 12.  No word on showtimes yet, so keep checking back here, or visit The Academy Theater website closer to the showtime.

PDXtreme, promises three days of horror, gore, crime and more, at  The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St) in Portland, OR!  Playing through December 6, the festival will screen shorts and full length features to add to to the December chill in the air.  You'll find showtimes for the films at the Facebook Event Page, and advance ticket sales, just under $32 bucks, at this link.
