The snow is receding, so here's some great stuff to do once you're able to get out of the house!

Well, it's been a rough week here in Portland, with the snowpocalypse shutting down the city.  But the rain is back, the snowball throwing hordes of Bigfoots are heading back into the hills and it's time for some great stuff happening around the Pacific Northwest.  To celebrate, I've included the rest of January in this edition of the Weekly Update, so you have plenty of time to mark your calendar with the events you want to attend.

I know we're all upset about the snow,
but don't take it out on the snowmen.
It's not their fault!

Please be sure to check out the Horror Calendar, with new updates on the guests coming to Crypticon in Seattle, information on Evil Dead: The Musical taking the stage in Renton, WA, and a lot more!

Remember, if you have, or know of, a horror/sci fi/fantasy event happening in the Pacific Northwest, email me at shadowoverportland@live.com and I'll list it on the site.  And remember, you will not be charged for the listing in any way.

As always, should you attend any of the events listed here, let the organizers know you read about it at The Shadow Over Portland!
Ongoing

The Blob will be oozing into The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) through January 19!  It might feature Steve McQueen in his first leading role, but this film's true star is the gelatinous space mass causing chaos in a small town!! Showtimes are 2:35 and 9:40 pm daily.  For more details, visit The Academy Theater website.

The H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, OR, is accepting film submissions for this October's festival in Portland, OR.  Films submitted will also be considered for any satellite festivals, including the biennial festival in Providence, RI.  For more details on submitting your Lovecraftian film, visit the FilmFreeway link.  Submissions are accepted through August 20.

Repressed Cinema presents a screening of the Roger Corman classic A Bucket of Blood, staring the great Dick Miller, tonight in GLORIOUS 16mm at The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR).  The show starts at 7:30 pm with a surprise art documentary short from Repressed's archive.  For additional details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit The Hollywood Theatre website.

The Northwest Horror Pub Quiz has been cancelled due to the weather.

Wednesday, January 18

Weird Wednesday at The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR) dares you to enter the Vampire's Dungeon.  Blood of Dracula's Castle, starring John Carradine, plays tonight at 9:15 pm.  It appears Drac and his bride are renting a castle in sunny California and the owner wants to evict them.  Not a good idea, as castles are hard to find on the West Coast, and the vampire couple want to stay for a long while.  As always, admission is FREE, but you must be 21 or older to attend.  Be sure to stop by the concession stand and buy some snacks and drinks before the film, to help The Joy's continuing effort to keep Wednesdays WEIRD.  No outside food or drinks are allowed, as Dracula might drag such patrons into his dungeon for such transgressions!  For more details, visit The Joy Cinema website.

Thursday, January 19

The Ball is back!  The Olympia Film Society Fright Club presents a screening of the 4K remastered Phantasm tonight at 9 pm at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave in Olympia, WA).  This restored version film looks BEAUTIFUL and needs to be seen on the big screen.  Tickets are $9.  For more details, visit the Olympia Film Society website.

------------

The McMenamins Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan St in Portland, OR) screens the Alfred Hitchcock classic, Psycho, this evening at 5:30 pm as part of the Hitchcock Film Festival.  Sure, Hitchcock made other masterpieces (many of which are being screened during the festival), but Psycho is (in my mind) a special case.  It pushed boundaries and broke taboos, some as simple as showing a toilet flushing onscreen, and the chance to see it on the big screen shouldn't be missed.  The film will also be screened on Saturday, January 21, and Sunday, January 22.  For more details on this screening, as well as other films in the Hitchcock Film Festival and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Facebook Event Page.

Friday, January 20

I can think of no better way to spend a cold January night than with a nice ghost story, and Friday Night Frights knows it as well.  Tonight at the Blue Mouse Theatre (2611 N Proctor St in Tacoma, WA) you can enjoy Ghost Story, starting at 10 pm.  Doors open around 9:30 pm, and tickets are just $6.  For more details, visit the Facebook Event Page.

------------

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman plays at The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) through January 26.  Allison Hayes is turned into a giant by a spaceman, and tears through the town on the trail of her unfaithful husband.  It's just too bad the poster's depiction of her highway rampage isn't on the screen, but the film is still a blast and will be in GLORIOUS 35mm!!  Showtimes have yet to be announced, so check back here, or at The Academy Theater website, later in the month for more details.

Russ Meyer's tale of violent women causing mayhem in the California desert, Faster Pussycat!  Kill!  Kill! screens tonight at 11:55 pm at the Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway in Vancouver, BC).  Martial artist Tura Satana became an icon as the leader of three sadistic go-go dancers out to steal a hidden fortune from a crippled man and his sons.  Tickets are $8 in advance, or if you show up in costume, $10 at the door.  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Rio Theatre website.

Miss Pamela Voorhees Presents: Get Your Geek On! tonight at 8 pm at The Embers Avenue (110 NW Broadway in Portland, OR).  You are encourged to come as "your most gloriously nerdy, cooky, strange self" for this show, which "promotes equality in a time when it seems to be harder to come by."  The show will feature burlesque and drag performance, some out of town performers, spoken word readings and a trivia contest.  Cover is just $5 (this is a 21 and older venue), doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm.  For more details, visit the Facebook Event Page.

Saturday, January 21

A classic of the pre-Code era, Rocket Sci-Fi Matinee presents Island of Lost Souls today at noon at the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St in Bellingham, WA).  Presented by Rocket Donuts, this version of The Island of Dr. Moreau isn't entirely faithful to Wells' novel, but it deals with the subject matter in a manner some would say is shocking for a film from the 30s.  Featuring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi, you should check this one out on the big screen!  For more details, visit the Pickford Film Center website.
