Sorry to be a bit late with this edition of the Weekly Update, but events this weekend kept me away from my desk. Still, you'll want to check out all the great events below, as so much is happening. The Portland Horror Film Festival is still going, some classic genre films are being screening in theaters and the The 7th Annual PDX Drive-In Spectacular has even more great classics to enjoy in the comfort of your own car.
As always, you'll want to check out the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar, as it's loading up with great movies, cons, bazaars and much more. Also, I'll be starting a Halloween 2022 page in the next few weeks, as several haunted attractions have announced opening dates!

The 13th Annual Guignolfest: 3-Day Horror Movie Contest
is looking for three more teams to join the 2021 list. If you're up to
making a 6:66 minute horror short in 72 hours, from script to final
edit, visit the link and sign up! But hurry, as only three slots are
left!!
Bleedingham: A Northwest Horror Short Film Festival, is accepting submissions for the 2021 program, scheduled to be held in Bellingham, WA, on Halloween weekend.
Northwest Ghost Tours has released its summer schedule. If you want to take a spooky, walking tour to the most haunted spots in Oregon City, be sure to check out the site. The tours run through August 14.
The Slay Film Festival is looking for some great horror short (8 minutes or less) films. The festival is taking submissions through September 15.
Playing This Week
The Portland Horror Film Festival takes place both online and (on selective dates) at the Hollywood Theatre
(4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) starting today. The festival will
run for nine days. Check the link for schedules and ticket prices.
UPDATE: Tickets for the in-person screenings are now available at the Hollywood Theatre website.
The Academy Theater
(7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) will carry over the animated film Wolfwalkers through Thursday, August 5.
Oh, I HAD to include this one! The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) presents Pig,
a revenge-thriller starring Nicolas Cage as a reclusive Oregon truffle
hunter on the trail of his kidnapped, prize hunting pig. Yeah, that
sounds AMAZING! And it must be, as the Rio continues to add additional
screenings. You can see it on Monday, July 26, at 9:15 pm,
at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, July 28, at 8:15 pm on Saturday, July 31 and
at 9:30 pm on August 2. Just stay tuned for any more additional
showings. Oh, add Wendesday and Thursday, August 4 and 5, at 9:15 pm.
Pig has also been carried over at the Darkside Cinema (215 SW 4th St in Corvallis, OR)
The latest by M. Night Shyamalan, Old, is the new release of the week at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR). The trailer looks good, and Shyamalan has released some good horror films. But still, Glass.... The film will run until Thursday, August 5.
Well, he did say he'd be back. The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR) will show Terminator 2 Judgment Day through Thursday, August 5. Werewolves Within is also playing at the theater through Monday, August 2.
The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) will show the time travel/comedy film Back to the Future through Thursday, August 5.

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) celebrates the 40th anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark with screenings on Sunday, August 1 at 6 pm, and Friday, August 6 at 8 pm.
Monday, August 2
The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) presents the Studio Ghibli classic Princess Mononoke at 1 pm today. The film is an English dub version.
Tuesday, August 3
The Lot + Hollywood Theatre presents a screening of the Pixar classic WALL-E, with an opening musical set by Night Heron. It all takes place at The Lot at Zidell Yards (3030 S Moody Ave in Portland, OR). Doors open at 7 pm, with the show starting at 8 pm.
Thursday, August 5
The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) Family Time series presents The Goonies, directed by the late Richard Donner, today at 4 pm.
The 7th Annual PDX Drive-In Spectacular continues tonight at the Portland Expo Center (2060 N Marine Dr in Portland, OR) with the time travel comedy Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Gates open at 7 pm, with music by Dirty Princess Band until dusk, when the movie begins.
Friday, August 6
The City of Vancouver, WA, Friday Night Movies in the Parks presents the superhero sequel Wonder Woman 1984. The film starts at dusk, at Washington Scool Park (2908 S St in Vancouver, WA).

Cult Classic Fridays at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) presents the animated classic Fantastic Planet tonight at 10 pm.
The 7th Annual PDX Drive-In Spectacular continues tonight at the Portland Expo Center (2060 N Marine Dr in Portland, OR) with the made-in-Oregon family classic The Goonies. Gates open at 7 pm, with music by the Builders and the Butchers until dusk, when the movie begins.
Weird Elephant at The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) will screen the South Korean monster film The Host on Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7. Both shows start at 10 pm.

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) will screen Kathryn Bigelow's vampire western Near Dark on Saturday, August 7, at 7 pm, and on Sunday, August 8, at 9:30 pm. Both screenings are in GLORIOUS 35mm.
Rose City Comic Con brings the 2008 live action/anime feature Speed Racer to the Clinton Street Theater
(2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) tonight at 7:30 pm. Admission is
FREE, but seating is limited, so get there early. I wonder if this
event has anything to do with Christina Ricci attending RCCC....
The Washington State Summer Con Again takes place Saturday and Sunday, August 7 and 8, at the Washington State Fair Events Center (110 9th Ave SW in Puyallup, WA). Guest include Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weastley from the Harry Potter series) and more.
The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show with the Clinton Street Cabaret tonight. The fun starts at 11:30 pm.

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) presents the restored version of the George Romero film, The Amusement Park, on Monday, August 9, at 7:30 pm, and on Thursday, August 12, at 7:30 pm. I saw this on the big screen last month and found it disturbing and disorienting. Very worth checking out.
