Be safe out there, Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy fans! We've got a lot of wildfires out there!!

I know I commented on the heat coming to the area last week, and even posted a hellish photo from a movie to say summer was going to hit us with some unseasonable temperatures one last time.  But I forgot how bad the fire situation was this year.

Now we've got a new wildfire in the Columbia River Gorge, ash falling in Portland, and it's not expected to be contained until the end of the month.  Looking at the wildfire maps, it seems the entire region is covered in flames, and people are being evacuated from the homes, facing the possibility of losing everything.  And the weather on the East Coast of the United States isn't looking much better, as Houston is dealing with the aftermath of one hurricane, with another looking like it will cause major damage to Florida and the Atlantic Coastline this weekend.

So I just want to take a moment to say I hope all of you and your families are safe and well, and that everyone gets through this craziness alive.  The reasons for the tragedies befalling us can be debated later.  For now, let's do everything we can to help those affected by these events and come to the aid of our families, friends and neighbors should tragedy befall them.  And let's remember those out in the midst of these disasters, risking their lives to protect others in need.  We ARE in this together, folks, and that's how we'll survive.

October Film Competitions

The 6th Annual Lovecraft Under the Gun 72 Hour Film Contest starts at 6 pm on September 14 at My Father's Place (523 SE Grand Ave in Portland, OR).  Get your filmmaking team together and put together a short Lovecraftian film in just 72 hours, and have it screened at the H. P. The 9th Annual Guignolfest: 3-Day Horror Movie Contest is looking for teams to compete in Portland's Original 72-hour Horror Movie Contest.  The films will be screened, and prizes awarded, on Sunday, October 29 at The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR).  The kick-off date is Friday, October 20, but you want to get your team registered soon, as only 15 slots are available and, as of September 6, eight teams have been confirmed.  So do not delay.  Visit the Facebook Event Page for all the details.

Zombie Fest Northwest 2017 takes place from 2 to 6 pm at Normandy Park Towne Center (19900 1st Ave S in Normandy Park, WA).  The Fest will have a special performance by the Seattle Thrillers zombie dance group, food booths, a charity beer garden, zombie costume contest, zombie face painting, raffles by local businesses, more zombies and a zombie mock disaster zone with emergency vehicles.  And you can gain awareness about emergency preparedness as well.  The fest will raise money for the Highline Schools foundation, local food banks and the Friends of Normandy Park Foundation.  More details will bee announced closer to the event date, so check back here, or the Facebook Event Page, for more details later in the year.

It might seem the Pacific Northwest is entering a new circle of Hell, but Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy fans will find some cool ways to beat the heat this week!

I know it's almost a tradition in the Pacific Northwest to complain about the heat, but this year has tested even the most sun loving residents in the area.  Here in Portland, we'll be seeing a few more days of temperatures climbing to 100 degrees F, making many of us looking forward to the first days of cool, wet rain.
