Happy first week of Spring in the soggy Pacific Northwest!

 

Sunday the 20th marks the first day of spring and, as expected in the Pacific Northwest, the weather will be cloudy and wet.  But fear not, elevated pollen counts and potential heat domes are just around the corner, so enjoy the rain and cool temperatures while you can!

 At least our rain is pretty normal.... For now!

If you feel like celebrating the first week of spring by attending a Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy film or event, this edition of the Weekly Update has a plentiful list of offerings, from modern animation and horror to classic John Carpenter films and MUCH MORE!  You'll even find a few live events to check out later this month.

The Beacon (4405 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA) will screen the vampire film Ganja and Hess tonight at7:30 pm.

The Grand Illusion (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) will show a 4k restoration (with a 5.1 audio mix) of John Carpenter's sci fi classic, Escape from New York, through Wednesday, March 23.

Saturday Secret Matinees return to the Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) with Daredevils of the Red Circle, featuring Charles Middleton (Ming the Merciless) as the villain in this 1939 serial, with a new chapter shown each week in GLORIOUS 16mm!  Of course, what's a serial without a feature, and each week, the episode will be paired with a secret feature film.  Bi-weekly themes will provide clues, but you have to show up to find out what's being shown!  The fun starts at 1 pm.

The Shaw Bros. Studios' attempt to create an Ultraman-like hero (or shamelessly rip the show off; you decide), Infra-Man, will be shown at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) in GLORIOUS 35mm tonight at 7:30 pm.

Wednesday, March 23

The Re-Run Theater series at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) the two part Wonder Woman episode "The Feminine Mystique," starring Lynda Carter as the Amazonian Princess and Debra Winger as her sister, Wonder Girl.  The show starts at 7:30 pm.

The Whiteside Theatre (361 SW Madison in Corvallis, OR) will show Blade Runner: The Final Cut tonight at 7 pm. 

 

Thursday, March 24

 

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will screen Bubba Ho-Tep tonight at 10 pm.  Man, Bruce Campbell deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance.

 

Stumptown Stages presents Tinderella: the Modern Musical, in which a princess is shown the magic of Tinder by her fairy-god-roommate.  Doesn't sound like a Disney-fied take on the classic fairy tale!  The production runs through April 17 at the Portland'5 Brunish Theatre at Antoinette Hatfield Hall (1111SW Broadway in Portland, OR).

Friday, March 25

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will screen Kwaidan, a collection of Japanese ghost tales, tonight at 10 pm.

The Kiggins' Cult of Horror series brings the podcast Horror Movie Talk to the Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA) to introduce The Exorcist tonight at 9:30 pm.

The second film in John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy," Prince of Darkness, will play at The Grand Illusion (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) through Wednesday, March 30.

 

You can head down the Yellow Brick Road to see him, or just go to Central Cinema (1411 21St Ave in Seattle, WA) and catch The Wizard of Oz on the big screen through Thursday, March 31.

 

David Lynch put allusions to The Wizard of Oz in his script, so it seems fitting that Central Cinema (1411 21St Ave in Seattle, WA) will show Wild at Heart through Wednesday, March 30.

 

The Mondo Trasho series at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) brings the infamous, and so craptastic, gore cut of Tammy and the T-Rex to the big screen tonight at 7:30 pm.

Capital City Comic Con returns this year to the Victoria Conference Centre and Crystal Garden (720 Douglas St in Victoria, BC) for a weekend of Pop Culture fun! 

UPDATE: Due to COVID concerns, this event has been postponed until September 23, 2022.

The 10th Annual Oregon Ghost Conference takes place this weekend at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center (415 1st Ave in Seaside, OR).

Saturday, March 26

Get ready for a major adrenaline boost as the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) screens The Road Warrior in GLORIOUS 35mm tonight at 7:30 pm.

John Carpenter's remake of the 1960 classic Village of the Damned will be at The Grand Illusion (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) through Thursday, March 31.

The International Mermaid Museum (7 S Arbor Rd in Aberdeen, WA) will hold its annual Mermaid Festival through Sunday, April 3.  During this week, admission into the museum is FREE.  Aside from the exhibits in the museum, you'll find a series of special attractions, including performances by Una the Mermaid and MORE!  Follow the museum on Facebook.  

The Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St in Bellingham, WA) continues the series It's Alive! with the 1932 pre-code horror/comedy classic The Old Dark House today at noon.

Thursday, March 31

Celebrate seven years of Queer Horror, and host Carla Rossi's birthday, at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) tonight at 8:30 pm.  It starts with an all-musical preshow, which is followed by the musical horror film about man-eating mermaids, The Lure.

 

Oh, the horror of Daylight Savings Time is here again!

Yep, it's that time of year.  And even though many of the clocks in our homes reset themselves, and some might rejoice at the idea of an extra hour of evening sunlight, we still have to make it through the next couple of days having lost an hour of sleep!  Oh, the HORROR!

This is what it looks like when the demon steals an hour of sleep at 2 am Sunday morning.

Of course, once you get through the grogginess a stolen hour of sleep can cause, the longer evening might have you looking for something to do.  Fortunately, this edition of the Weekly Update is full of great movies, and a few stage events, to occupy the extra time.

And if you're feeling really ambitious, you can head over to the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar and start planning out your summer, when the evenings get really long.  Remember, I update the calendar every few days, so it pays to keep checking back.

The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) will show the sci fi film Strawberry Mansion tonight at 10 pm.

The 5th Avenue Cinema (501 SW Hall St in Portland, OR) will show the original Godzilla (I assume, as the cast list doesn't include Raymond Burr) at 7 and 9:30 pm tonight and on Sunday, March 13, at 3 pm.

A new restoration of John Carpenter's sci fi/horror classic The Thing plays tonight and tomorrow night at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR).

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will screen New York Ninja tonight at 10:30 pm.  Directed and starring martial arts actor John Liu, the film was abandoned during production, resulting in all original sound materials become lost.  35 years later, Vinegar Syndrom found the negatives and completed the film.  The voice talents include Don "The Draagon" Wilson, Linnea Quigley, Michael Berryman,Vince Murdocco, Matt Mitler, Leon Isaac Kennedy, Ginger Lynn Allen and Cynthia Rathrock. Check it out if you can!!

Church of Film presents Invasion, a moody, noir-ish, antifascist take on Seven Samurai, at 8 pm tonight at the Red Fox (5128 N Albina Ave in Portland, OR).  The screening will take place outdoors, in a covered and heated area.

 

The new version of Dune plays at 1:20 pm on Sunday, March 13, and at 6 pm on Monday, March 14, at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC).

Kaiju Comic Show 3 - The Kaiju Strike Again takes place today from 10 am to 5 pm at the site of the former TFAW comic shop on Broadway (2916 NE Broadway in Portland, OR).  Admission to Preview Hour (10 to 11 am) is $5, with admission at $2 from 11 am on.
