Twas Three Days Before Christmas; A Horror-days post

Twas three days before Christmas
And, not meaning to boast,
The Weekly Update was done
And ready to post.

I'd list it all
For Northwest Horror fans to see
Plenty of stuff was listed
To make them smile with glee

When, suddenly, on the Internet
There arose such a clatter
I want to my computer
Thinking, "What the hell is the matter?"

I opened a window
And what did I see
But a lot more events
Just waiting for me.

I saw the Rio Theatre
Up in Vancouver BC,
Listing a bunch of great movies
I'm sure you'll want to see.

The Academy Theater in Portland
Starts the New Year right,
With aliens, big bugs
And a giant woman to stir up a fright

Friday Night Frights in Tacoma
Released a list, oh so scary,
Of movies at the Blue Mouse Theatre
To make Horror fans merry.

The Hollywood Theatre in Portland
Has Riki-Oh on New Years Day,
And terrifying treats
Coming in February

Okay, that doesn't rhyme
Just cut me some slack,
I'm only a writer
A poet's skill I do lack.

It's all on the Horror Calendar
Here's the link you seek,
But I've included a few in early January below
Just to give you a peek.

Remember to email me
If you know of an event,
shadowoverportland@live.com
It's time very well spent.

And should you attend
Any event that you see,
Let the organizers know
You read about it from me.

So enjoy the Weekly Update
That I've posted tonight.
Merry Christmas to all,
And to all a GOOD FRIGHT!

This is Sugar Plum Gary, the only survivor when his orphanage was visited by Santa.  Now a Santanist (no, that is not a typo), he's telling the truth about the jolly old elf, and it's NOT the saccharine tale you see in a Rankin/Bass animated special.  Sugar Plum Gary is Emmett Montgomery's one man comedy show, part of the the Cracked Christmas shows, playing at 18th and Union (1406 18th Ave in Seattle, WA) on Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30 pm through December 24.  Montgomery is a veteran of Seattle's alternative comedy scene, has appeared on Last Comic Standing and is the creator of the Pacific Northwest Horror Enthusiast and Friendship Society group on Facebook, so expect some funny, creepy tales in this show.  For more details and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the 18th and Union website.

Open Auditions

Mark your calendars, as auditions for the The Night Attacks take place today and tomorrow (January 21).  Details are scant at this time, but the auditions will be for principal actors and extras (some roles are paid) for a feature-length horror film.  Dylan Hillerman and Julia Arrgh, the people responsible for GuignolFest, have already started filming in Transylvania!  Most of the film will be set in Portland, so if you want to be part of a local independent horror film, keep checking back here, or visit the Facebook Event Page, for more details as they become available.

December, 2016

Wednesday, December 21

The holiday season gets the Weird Wednesday treatment as The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR) presents Don't Open Till Christmas tonight at 9:15 pm.  No, this is not another killer Santa film.  Instead, this focuses on a maniac roaming the streets of London killing people dressed as the jolly old elf!  See, the movie IS different from your normal holiday slasher flick!!  As always, admission is free, but you must be 21 or older to attend.  Be sure to visit the concession stand to support the noble efforts of The Joy Cinema to keep Wednesdays WEIRD!  And please, do not bring outside food or drinks into the theater, as the Santa slayer might make an exception for such naughty film fans.  For more details, visit The Joy Cinema website

Thursday, December 22

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) presents Queer Horror for the Holidays tonight at 7:30 pm.  The bimonthly program Queer Horror is stuffing your cinematic stocking with short horror films (holiday themed or secular) from established filmmakers and amateurs.  Yes, you can submit your short film to TheCarlaRossi@gmail.com (submission deadline is December 12) and you might see it up on the big screen!  For more details and a link for advance ticket sales, visit The Hollywood Theatre website.

Friday, December 23

I think it's safe to say that many Northwest Horror Fans love How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  Tonight at the Crush Bar (1400 SE Morrison St in Portland, OR), de Lioncourt Productions present a slightly, um, burlesque take on the classic holiday tale, entitled How the Grinch Stole My Pasties.  Doors open at 8:30 pm, with the performance starting at 9 pm.  Tickets are $16 in advance, $20 at the door.  As you might guess, this is a 21 and older venue.  For more details and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Facebook Event Page.

------------

Up in Seattle, things get a bit more metal as SpikyDyke Productions present Brutalesque Holiday Onslaught: A Seasonal Travesty of Epic Proportions.  Shows are at 7 and 10 pm (doors open 30 minutes prior) at The Rendezvous Seattle (2322 2nd Ave in Seattle, WA). Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door.  For more details and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Facebook Event Page.

If you're looking for something more family-friendly, but still a bit spooky, the Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) is screening Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory through December 29.  Showtimes vary through December 29, so visit the Academy Theater website for details.

------------

The Olympia Film Society Fright Club presents a screening of Joe Dante's holiday classic Gremlins tonight at 9 pm at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE in Olympia, WA).  You know the three rules and you know the mayhem that will ensue once they are broken!  Tickets are $9, and you'll find more details at The Olympia Film Society website.

Saturday, December 24

The Olympia Film Society Kids Club and Captain Little Toy Shop present a screening of Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory today at 11:30 am at the Capitol Theater (206 5 Ave SE in Olympia, WA).  Give your young ones something to shiver over aside from the cold winter weather, as Wonka terrorizes a group of kids during a tour of his chocolate factory, which seems located on one of the outer rings of Hell!  Seriously, it's a great family film with a wicked sense of humor, a few moral lessons and a perfect performance from the late Gene Wilder.  Tickets are $8, with kids 12 and under admitted free.  For more details, visit the Olympia Film Society website.

Sunday, December 25
Merry Christmas

Hope you're having a happy Horror-day!  And, if you haven't seen it before, check out Treevenge!!

The latest film from Norwegian director Andre Ovredal (Trollhunter), The Autopsy of Jane Doe, plays tonight at the Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway in Vancouver, BC) tonight at 9:30 pm.  The film, Ovredal's first English release, centers on a father and son coroner team (played by Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch) as they experience supernatural phenomena while examining the body of a "Jane Doe," who died with no apparent cause.  Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Rio Theatre website.

Friday, December 30

You'd be "Stupid!  Stupid!" to miss a chance to see the Ed Wood "classic," Plan 9 from Outer Space, on the big screen at The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) through January 5.  Sure, it's considered by some to be the worst movie ever made, but that's not true (trust me!).  It might be silly, full of bad dialog, bad acting and bad Fake Shemp Lugosi moments, but the movie has a certain charm and much more energy than something like The Creeping Terror.  Showtimes have yet to be announced, so check back, or visit The Academy Theater website, later in the month for more details.

January 2017

Sunday, January 1

Okay, you might think it strange that I'm listing the Hong Kong-A-Thon at The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) on the site.  Sure, you'll catch the Bruce Lee classic, Enter the Dragon, at 2 pm, and John Woo's The Killer at 6:15 pm, all on the big screen.  But sandwiched in the middle, at 4:15 pm, is the ultra violent kung fu classic Riki Oh: The Story of Ricky in GLORIOUS 35mm!  Ricky walks into a corrupt prison after killing the scumbag responsible for his girlfriend's death and instantly runs afoul of the warden and his evil henchmen.  Mayhem ensues in the form of exploding heads, intestines used as weapons and an insane climax featuring an industrial meat grinder!  This is the wildest, goriest martial arts movie ever committed to film, and you don't want to miss it on the big screen!!  Admission is just $12 for all three films, and I suggest you buy your tickets early.  For more details and a link to advance ticket sales, visit The Hollywood Theatre website.

Tuesday, January 3

The latest film from Norwegian director Andre Ovredal (Trollhunter), The Autopsy of Jane Doe, plays tonight at the Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway in Vancouver, BC) tonight at 9:15 pm.

The Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway in Vancouver, BC) is screening the 1973 sci fi classic, Westworld, tonight at 6:30 pm.  This film, starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin, was the inspiration for the current HBO series, and well worth seeing on the big screen.  Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Rio Theatre website.

Friday, January 6

The splat-stick Nazi zombie classic, Dead Snow, screens tonight at the Rio Theatre (1660 E Broadway in Vancouver, BC) tonight at 11:30 pm.  A group of medical students in a remote, mountainous area of Norway, make the BIG mistake of picking up some gold that was taken by Nazis, and now their reanimated corpses want it back.  Of course, mayhem ensues.  The film is presented with English subtitles, but the gore translates to all languages!  Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door.  For more details, and a link to advance ticket sales, visit the Rio Theatre website
