It's beginning to look like THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR in the Pacific Northwest!

I'm not kidding with that headline.  Just take a look at this edition of the Weekly Update and you'll find some great events for Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans.  It's like we've hit the jackpot, as theaters continue to reopen and program some great genre flicks.

However, someone is always standing in the way saying, "But...."

As we're seeing Covid cases rise, please be careful out there.  Sure, mask mandates are lifted in many areas, but I'd suggest keeping them handy, even if you're vaccinated.  And, if you don't feel safe around crowds, maybe stay home and stream something.  Finally, if you haven't been vaccinated, please get your Fauci-ouchie soon.  I got mine last month and have yet to experience any long-term effects.  Keep yourself safe, keep others safe, and help be part of the solution to this pandemic.

Also, another heat dome is forming later this week.  If temperatures hit triple digits in your area, use the links provided to make sure the event you want to attend is open.  Don't forget, several theaters shut down during the last extreme heat wave, as A/C units weren't designed to handle such temperatures, and you don't want to drive to a venue and find it's closed.

The 13th Annual Guignolfest: 3-Day Horror Movie Contest is looking for three more teams to join the 2021 list.  If you're up to making a 6:66 minute horror short in 72 hours, from script to final edit, visit the link and sign up!   But hurry, as only three slots are left!!

 

Bleedingham: A Northwest Horror Short Film Festival, is accepting submissions for the 2021 program, scheduled to be held in Bellingham, WA, on Halloween weekend.

 

Northwest Ghost Tours has released its summer schedule.  If you want to take a spooky, walking tour to the most haunted spots in Oregon City, be sure to check out the site.  The tours run through August 14.

 

The Slay Film Festival is looking for some great horror short (8 minutes or less) films.  The festival is taking submissions through September 15.  

Stalker Farms Haunted Attractions is hiring scareactors, paintball actors and security for the October 2021 haunted house season.  The link will take you to the attractions Facebook page, where you'll find all the details and a link to the application page.

 

Playing This Week

 

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) presents the Portland premiere of the Sci Fi film Settlers tonight at 7 pm.  The film will also screren on Saturday, July 24, Sunday, July 25, Monday, July 26, Tuesday, July 27, Wedensday, July 28, and Thursday, July 29.

 

The M-F Drive-In (84322 OR-11 in Milton Freewater, OR) will screen A Quiet Place Part II and The Conjouring: The Devil Made Me Do It from Friday, July 23, to Tuesday, July 27.  You can also visit the official Facebook Page for updates.

 

The Joy Cinema and Pub (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR) will show the werewolf mystery/comedy Werewolves Within and the rocking action film The Road Warrior starting Friday, July 23.

The Academy Theater (7818 SE Stark St in Portland, OR) will carry over the animated film Wolfwalkers through Thursday, July 29.

The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) presents Mandibles, the latest from French writer/director Quentin Dupieux (Rubber).  The film deals with two deadbeats who find a GIANT fly and decide to train it and make money off it.  Sounds, well, interesting.  

Oh, I HAD to include this one!  The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) presents Pig, a revenge-thriller starring Nicolas Cage as a reclusive Oregon truffle hunter on the trail of his kidnapped, prize hunting pig, tonight at 8 pm, and at 9 pm on Saturday, July 17.  Yeah, that sounds AMAZING!

 

UPDATE:  Two more screenings have been added: Monday, July 19 at 9:25 pm, and a final screening on Wednesday, July 21, at 9:15 pm. 

 

UPDATE: It appears Pig is really big (go ahead, groan if you want) at the Rio, as additional screens have been added.  The film will appear at 8:20 pm on Saturday, July 24, on Sunday, July 25, at 9:30 pm, on Monday, July 26, at 9:15 pm, at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, July 28, and at 8:15 pm on Saturday, July 31.

UPDATE: Darkside Cinema (215 SW 4th St in Corvallis, OR) will show Pig at 8 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 23, 24 and 25.

The latest by M. Night Shyamalan, Old, is the new release of the week at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR).  The trailer looks good, and Shyamalan has released some good horror films.  But still, Glass....

Old will open at the Granada 3 Theatre (1311 Adams Ave in La Grande, OR) on Friday, July 23.

 

Friday, July 23

 

Weird Elephant at The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) presents James Cameron's sci fi/horror/action classic Aliens on Friday and Saturday, July 23 and 24, at 10 pm.  

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) screens the time travel classic Back to the Future tonight at 11 pm.

You'll find more Sci Fi thrills at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) tonight, as the John Carpenter/Dan O'Bannon cult film Dark Star screens at 10 pm.

The City of Vancouver, WA, Friday Night Movies in the Parks presents the recent Disney animated film, Raya and the Last Dragon.  The film starts at dusk, at Edgewood Park (600 Edward Lane in Vancouver, WA).

 

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will screen the indie horror film Censor on Friday, July 23, at 8:45 pm.

CineMagic Theatre (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) are showing to classic John Carpenter films, They Live and The Thing, on Friday, July 23, and Saturday, July 24.  Before each film, you can enjoy 30 minutes of random trailers from the theater's collection.  The movies are ticketed independently, so you can attend one or both.

Saturday, July 24

The Rocky Horror Picture Show returns to the Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA), along with the Denton Delinquents to do the Time Warp again!  Purchase approved prop bags at the theater, wear a costume and give yourself over to absolute pleasure.  The doors open and the pre-show begins at 10 pm.  Advance ticket purchases are required.  If you want to bring a bunch of friends and sit together, consider purchasing as a group.  For more details, including a link for advance ticket sales, visit the Kiggins Theatre website. 

 

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will also show The Rocky Horror Picture Show, where you're invited to come "Be It" Yourself.  Doors open at 11 pm, with a preshow at 11:30 pm and the movie starting around midnight.

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will screen the Sci Fi Noir cult classic Dark City tonight at 8 pm.  If you've never seen this one, check it out on the big screen!  It will be so worth it!! 

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) presents a digital restoration of the 1939 musical fantasy Wizard of Oz today at 2 pm, and Sunday, July 25 at 2 pm. 

 

The Grand Cinema presents a FREE, outdoor showing of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse at 9 pm on Saturday, July 24, at the Salishan Family Investment Center Field (1724 E 44th St in Tacoma, WA).  The screen is part of the theater's new Outdoor Movie series.  Click on the link and RSVP to attend.

Monday, July 26

The "Dark" theme continues at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR), with the cult classic Donnie Darko playing tonight at 7 pm.  The screening is part of the Clinton St. Resistance series and will benefit the Oregon Justice Resource Center. 

Tuesday, July 27

The Lot + Hollywood Theatre presents a screening of the Jim Henson classic The Muppet Movie, with an opening musical set by 1939 Ensemble.  It all takes place at The Lot at Zidell Yards (3030 S Moody Ave in Portland, OR).  Doors open at 7 pm, with the show starting at 8:15 pm.

Wednesday, July 28

 

Is it just a horrible film, or a mind-melding horror beyond human comprehension?  Find out tonight, as The Whiteside Theatre (361 SW Madison Ave in Corvallis, OR) brings the crap-tastic Cats back to the big screen tonight at 7 pm. 

 

The Portland Horror Film Festival takes place both online and (on selective dates) at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) starting today.  The festival will run for nine days.  Check the link for schedules and ticket prices.

A new take on the Arthurian legend, David Lowery's The Green Knight will be screened during the reopening week of the CineMagic Theater (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR).  It also opens at The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA).

Saturday, July 31

 

The Hollywood Theatre screens Hayao Miyazaki's 1989 anime classic, Kiki's Delivery Service, in an English dubbed version on Saturday, July 31 at 3 pm.  The film will screen in Japanese with English subtitles on Sunday, August 1, at 7 pm.

 

Shogun Assassin, the English-dubbed reedit of the first to Lone Wolf and Cub films, will paint the screen red at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) tonight at 10:30 pm.  Seriously, this is gloriously gory and worth catching on the big screen!

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) will screen The Rocky Horror Picture Show, complete with the Clinton Street Cabaret tonight at midnight.  Doors open at 11 pm, with a pre-show at 11:30 pm.
