I'm back on schedule!

I'm pretty thrilled to get this edition of the Weekly Update out on time.  Sure, it might be later in the evening than I'd like, but at least it's not Saturday.

And thankfully, if I am missing my deadline, I don't have an editor breathing down my back.

Anyway, you might notice the list of first run films has dwindled, as the major studios flood theaters with their summer blockbusters.  But that's no problem as some smaller theaters are opening The Boogeyman and Moon Garden this week.  And several great second run features are out there as well.

You'll also find links to the Mid Valley Comic Art Expo, taking place this weekend in Salem, OR, and this evening's Shenaniganza Night Market in Portland, OR.  And don't forget, the Portland Horror Film Festival starts this Wednesday in Portland, OR, and The Traveling Vampire Show stops in Eugene, OR, next Friday.  All the details are below, as well as MUCH MORE!

Stranger Things: The Experience comes to a capacious warehouse at 1750 Occidental Ave S in Seattle, WA, through Sunday, August 6.  Children under 5 years of age will not be admitted due to content, and anyone under 14 years old must be accompanied by an adult.  You have to expect some real scares when you enter the Upside Down.

The Wyrd War Gallery (3505 NE Broadway in Portland, OR) spring exhibition, Murder in the Front Room: The Art, Insanity, Scrawlings and Sketches of of Mark DeVito is open every Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 7 pm through June 3.  Check out the fan banners, original sketch designs and posters for bands like Metallica, Motorhead, Slayer, The Cult, Twisted Sister, and much more! 

Hidden Worlds: The Films of LAIKA is open at the Museum of Pop Culture (located in the Seattle Center; 325 5th Ave N in Seattle, WA).  The exhibit features never-before-seen artifacts from the Laika production studios, immersive set displays, character interactive and a sneak peek at the studio's next feature, Wildwood.  The exhibit will be open through Summer 2024.

 

The Museum of Pop Culture (325 5th Ave N in Seattle, WA) has Jim Henson puppets and set pieces from the 2019 Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on display now.  You can read about the display, and the work the museum put into displaying the artifacts, at the link.

The Northwest Flying Saucer Film Festival is accepting UFO/Alien themed short films, documentaries, animation or music videos for the festival, which takes place on September 22 at McFiler's Chehalis Theater (558 N Market Blvd in Chehalis, WA). Submissions are accepted on FilmFreeway through July 15.

Friday, June 2

The Shenaniganza Night Market takes place from 7:30 pm tonight to 1 am at Urbanite (1005 SE Grand Ave in Portland, OR).  Expect to find music, art and shenanigans, as well as vendors and MORE. 

The Midnight Movie at the Joy Cinema (11959 SW Pacific Highway in Tigard, OR) will screen Dracula's Treasure, starring the one and only Santo, tonight at midnight.

VHS Night at CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) will screen Class of 1999, you could call it the Terminator as a teacher, tonight at 10 pm in GLORIOUS VHS.  VHS trailers start at 9:30 pm.

The Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre (508 S Main St in Moscow, ID) will show the anime sci fi classic Ghost in the Shell, in Japanese with English subtitles, tonight at 7 pm.

The 99W Drive-In (3110 Portland Rd in Newberg, OR) with show 1984's Ghostbusters after Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse through Sunday, June 4.

The La Grande Drive-In (404 20th St in La Grande, OR) is showing Renfield after Fast X tonight and tomorrow night.

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) presents a 50th anniversary, 4K restoration screening of John Waters' Pink Flamingos tonight at 11 pm.  

A 4K restoration of Stephen Sayadian's avant-garde erotic remake of Dr. Caligari, plays through Sunday, June 4, at The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA).

Saturday, June 3

The Mid Valley Comic Art Expo is expanding to TWO DAYS this year.  The event will take place today and tomorrow at the Oregon State Fairgrounds Columbia Hall (2330 17th St NE in Salem, OR.  Follow the event of Facebook for the latest news.

Well, I had no idea The PNW Unicorns existed.  Unicorns Blue and Sky will be the Historic Venersborg Schoolhouse (24309 NE 209th St in Battleground, WA) from 1 to 3 pm today.  Parents are invited to take as many photos as they like of their children meeting these magical creatures.  Admission is $20 per child, but adults accompanying a child are admitted FREE.  Visit the link above and send a message to reserve your spot.

The Hollywood Theatre (4122 SE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) will show Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro through Monday, June 5.

It sucks when someone claims I Know What You Did Last Summer, when your activities involve MURDER!  The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will show this slasher classic tonight at 10:30 pm.

No, it's not that Twilight playing at The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA; scheduled through Tuesday, June 6), but Hungarian auteur György Fehér's murder mystery and mediation on time and space.  Just needed to clear that up.

Sunday, June 4

S.I.N SUNDAY at the Hollywood Theatre (412 SE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) brings The Crow back from the dead and onto the big screen tonight at 7 pm.

The Olympia Regional Learning Academy presents Liaka studio's Kubo and the Two Strings at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE in Olympia, WA) today at 1 pm.

The animated Ukrainian fantasy film Mavka: The Forest Song, is playing today at the Ark Lodge Cinemas (4816 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA) at noon.  I don't know if it's subtitled or dubbed.

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will show Ari Aster's Beau is Afraid today at 1:45 pm., on Tuesday, June 6, at 8:45 pm, and on Wednesday, June 7, at 5:55 pm.

The Traveling Vampire Show descents on Old Nick's Pub (211 Washington St in Eugene, OR) for a night of dark, decadent delights.  Doors open at 8 pm, show starts at 9 pm.

CineMagic (2021 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland, OR) presents Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End) as well as the films that inspired it (Night of the Living Dead, Point Blank, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers) through Thursday, June 15.  Visit the link for showtimes.

Weird Elephant at The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) will show the dark horror/fantasy Moon Garden tonight and tomorrow night at 10 pm.

The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) will screen The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster, about a brilliant teenager trying to cure death after the murder of her brother, through Wednesday, June 14.

Mixing ninja mayhem with The Exorcist, Cannon film's insanely fun Ninja III: The Domination is at The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) tonight at 10:15 pm, and tomorrow night at 9:30 pm.

Get ready to stay out of the water, as the Egyptian Theatre (229 S Broadway in Coos Bay, OR) screens Jaws tonight and tomorrow at 7 pm. 

Saturday, June 10

The Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Ave in Portland, OR) will host Guillermo del Toro: Crafting Pinocchio through September 17.  If you've seen the film (and even if you haven't yet, but what are you waiting for?), you don't want to miss this exhibit into the making of a stop-motion classic.

The Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St in Bellingham, WA) will show the animated sci fi film The Mitchells vs. the Machines, about a dysfunctional family's vacation interrupted by the robot apocalypse, today at 1:30 pm.

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will screen the director's cut of Ridley Scott's Alien at 8:15 pm, followed by James Cameron's sequel Aliens at 10:40 pm.  You can by tickets to your favorite, or sit back and watch both for one sweet price.

In conjunction with the Portland Art Museum, (and in advance of the Discovering del Toro Film Series), PAM CUT will hold multiple screenings of Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio at the Whitsell Auditorium at the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Ave in Portland, OR) through Sunday, June 25.  Visit the link for showtimes and more details.

The Dark Market creeps into The Coffin Club (421 SE Grand in Portland, OR) today from 2 to 8 pm.  You'll find two floors of local artist vending their wares, which you can peruse after having a drink at the bar.  The Coffin Cart on the back patio will be serving food.  Admission is FREE, but this is a 21 and older event.

The Roxy Bremerton (270 4th St in Bremerton, WA) will show Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome tonight at 6 pm.
