Congratuations to Jordan Peele and Guillermo del Toro!

Wow, Sunday was a big night for genre movies.  I didn't watch the Academy Awards live, as I haven't for the past couple of decades.  Most of the nominees were films I haven't any desire to see, or ones that make me wonder who the hell is behind the films that get recognition, or how much the studio had spent to get on the ballot.  So, even though this was a rare year, as I'd seen two of the Best Picture nominees (you probably know which ones), I didn't bother finding a place to watch the show.  Hell, the Academy seldom awards an Oscar to fantasy or horror film.

So imagine my surprise when I went online that evening and found I would have to change the listings for The Shape of Water and Get Out from Oscar nominated to Oscar winning.  I had no idea the (mostly old, mostly white male) Academy members would honor an African American horror film, or a movie about a mute woman and her gillman lover.

I think someone spiked the water in Hollywood.  And I think I know who.

Hey guys, no worries, I've got you covered. 

They'll never know what hit them!

Okay, I know this is a moment that might be a long time coming, the recognition of genre films by the Hollywood elite.  But the Academy has a long history of making a statement, than going back to business as usual, so I'm not getting on the "change is coming" bandwagon.  And I will not go into the politics of the awards, as so many sites have in the past few days, as it just feels futile.

Instead, everyone at The Shadow Over Portland office (okay, it's me and  my my monster figures) would just like to wish Jordan Peele and Guillermo del Toro a well earned congratulations and hope the awards boost allows them to keep making GREAT genre films.  You gentlemen deserve the awards.

That said, let's get on to the Weekly Update.  To start, the Laurelhurst Theater and Pub in Portland will be screening District 9 as part of their Sci Fi Month, while the Academy Theater will screening the original Planet of the Apes this week.

March isn't coming in like a lion for Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans. But what's coming up is TERRIFIC!

It looked like 2018 was going to overload Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans, as EVERY DAY of the past two months had something to do, see or experience.  So of course, I expected March come in like a lion...

Or, better still, a roaring Id Monster!

But it appears things are slowing down in March.  But the events are going to be AWESOME!  To start, check out the Buy Tickets Now section below for details on the 35mm screenings of Sugar Hill and It Came From Outer Space (in 3D and with star Kathleen Hughes in attendance) at The Hollywood Theatre in Portland at the end of the month.  You'll also find details on some terrific Star Wars themed burlesque performances coming to British Columbia this month.

March is Sci Fi Month at the Laurelhurst Theater in Portland, and the first feature, Predator, is now playing.  Frankenstein's Comicbook Swap and Comix Thing returns to Portland next weekend, and, in case you forgot, the Emerald City Comic Con is in Seattle this weekend.

The Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE in Olympia, WA) is hosting a screening of My Neighbor Totoro as a fundraiser sponsored by the Tumwater School District's Highly Capable Program and the Parent Teacher Organization of Michael T. It's looks like a dicey weekend for Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans!

Well, I got up for the day job and headed to the bus stop, walking in a winter SNOW-POCALYPSE!  Now, some people outside the Pacific Northwest think we tend to over-react to just a light dusting of snow, but they don't realize the hazards even a moderate snowfall can bring to the area. 

To start, the local Bigfoot population use any amount of city snowfall as an excuse to come down from the mountains and chase cats, rummage through yards and leave some really big footprints on sidewalks.  Of course, you can't follow them, as most Bigfoots are practical jokers and leave prints in a long loop.  You know you've been had by a Bigfoot as you can hear their deep, low giggles as you follow their trail back to your starting point.

And don't even get me started on the Evil Snowmen.   They're just, well, evil.

But an even more horrid fate awaits Pacific Northwest Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Fans heading out this week, that of the dreaded Cancelled Event.  If you plan to attend an event listed in this edition of the Weekly Update, please be sure to click on the link or, better yet, call the venue to make sure it hasn't been cancelled.  Depending on where you live, snowy or icy roads can lead to a cancellation, and you DO NOT want to be on the roads, only to find out the event you were traveling to was cancelled or postponed.
