I hope this edition of the Weekly Update got it right!

Fingers and tentacles crossed that I didn't screw up somewhere, as this was an interesting week to write about.  With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I had to write about three films (Disney's Strange World, the coming of age romantic cannibal road film Bones and All, and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio) opening in different theaters at different days.  So, if it looks like I'm repeating myself with all the similar posts about those films, well, I had no other way to do it.

"Yeah, but that was in a different theater.  Now shut up, I'm working here!"

If you live in the US, please use the links on the site to make sure the theater you want to attend will be open should you plan to catch a film on Thanksgiving day.  Some are closed, so check first!

As the holidays season progresses, expect to see more Krampus sightings, more genre Christmas movies, bazaars and the like.  In fact, you'll find plenty of them at the Horror/Sci Fi/Fantasy Calendar right now.  Of course, I'll be updating it with all the latest events taking place through December and into 2023 as I find more stuff to report on, so keep checking back.

Live Attractions

Wyrd War (3505 NE Broadway St in Portland, OR) is hosting an opening reception from 5 to 8 pm today for Witch's Eye: The Camera Lens as Occult Device, The Art and Legacy of William Mortensen.  Curated by acclaimed collector and archivist Stephen Romano, the exhibit features original photographic works of the 20th century master of the macabre William Mortensen, called the Antichrist by Ansel Adams.  The exhibit will be displayed through November 26.

 

The Marvel Universe of Super Heroes makes a stop at OMSI (1945 SE Water Ave in Portland, OR) through April 9, 2023.  Marvel (see what I did there) at the hundred of artifacts, from original comic book pages, interactive displays, life-size statues of Marvel heroes, costumes and props from films and TV programs, and MUCH MORE.  Excelsior! 

The Museum of Pop Culture (325 5th Ave N in Seattle, WA) has Jim Henson puppets and set pieces from the 2019 Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on display now.  You can read about the display, and the work the museum put into displaying the artifacts, at the link.

Online Attractions

Monsters vs. Madness: A Benefit Aution for Planned Parenthood goes live online today and runs through Sunday, November 27. It features hand painted figures from many famous artists, including local FX artist Chris Walas, as well as Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, Steve Niles and MANY MORE!  Follow the event on Facebook.

Friday, November 18

 

The Krampus Toy Drive takes place for 5 pm to 9 pm at The 2nd Annual Kris Kringle Market at the Thurston County Fairgrounds and Event Center (3054 Carpenter Rd SE in Olympia, WA).  All toys will be donated to Santa's Castle.  Each donation receives one FREE general admission ticket.  Krampus Seattle will be at the event on Saturday, November 19, from 4:30 to close as well (the toy drive takes place on Friday only).  

 

Friday Night Frights is showing the 80s sci fi horror film Chopping Mall at the Blue Mouse Theatre (2611 N Proctor St in Tacoma, WA) tonight only at 10 pm.  Check out one of the best exploding heads in cinematic history on the big screen!

 

The Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) will show Ti West's Pearl, staring Mia Goth, tonight at 8:45 pm.

Saturday, November 19

The Grand Cinema (606 Fawcett Ave in Tacoma, WA) will show the Fantasy film The NeverEnding Story today at 10 am.

SIFF Cinema Uptown (511 Queen Anne Ave N in Seattle, WA) presents an all ages screening of Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo today at 11 am.

VHS Uber Alles will screen an unnamed David Heavener action film (he apparently acts in, writes, directs, produces and provides the score for a majority of his movies) at The Grand Illusion Cinema (1403 NE 50th St in Seattle, WA) in GLORIOUS VHS tonight at 9:30 pm.

The final film in the giant turtle's triumphant return to the big screen, Gamera: Revenge of Iris, plays at 2 pm today at The Beacon (4405 Rainier Ave S in Seattle, WA). 

 

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) is showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show without a shadowcast tonight at midnight.  Doors open at 11:30 pm.   

 

Sunday, November 20

 

Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st Ave in Portland, OR) will show Ana Lily Amirpour's vampire film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night tonight at 7:15 pm.

 

Church of Film brings Occult Bolshevism, an eccentric J-Horror film by the author of Ringu about spiritualists attempting to summon Soviet specters of the past, to the Red Fox (5128 N Albina Ave in Portland, OR) tonight at 7 pm.  Admission is FREE for this outdoor screening in a covered and heated area.

 

Monday, November 21

 

The Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St in Portland, OR) is hosting a special anniversary screening of Twilight tonight at 7 pm.  The even features trivia, audience interaction and more surprises, and the screening will donate 10% of ticket sales to the Quileute Indian Reservation, located near Forks, WA.  Costumes are encouraged, and prizes awarded!

Urban Unglued presents The Feast of the Beasts Market, an unique art market, this weekend inside the Outlet Collection Mall (1101 Outlet Collection Way SW in Auburn, WA), between the Food Court and Burlington.  On Sunday only, you can have your photo taken with Krampus.  Hours are 10 am to 7 pm Friday and Saturday, and 11 am to 7 pm on Sunday.

Jurassic Quest, the largest and most realistic dinosaur exhibit, roars into the Pacific Northwest at the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds (17402 NE Delfel Rd in Ridgefield, WA) through Sunday, November 27.  Follow the event on Facebook for the latest details.

The Rio Grind Film Fest at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway in Vancouver, BC) presents the Canadian premiere of Satanic Hispanics, an anthology of five short films from some of the leading Latin filmmakers in the Horror genre, tonight at 9:30 pm.  The event includes a live Q and A with director Gigi Saul Guerrero, and plays with the short film Tiger by the Tail.  

 

The Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA) will show the fantasy classic The Princess Bride through Monday, November 28.

The Mondo Trasho series at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd in Portland, OR) will show the Thanksgiving slasher Blood Rage tonight at 9:30 pm. 

The 7th Street Theatre (313 7th St in Hoquiam, WA) will show the animated fantasy action adventure Rise of the Guardians tonight and tomorrow.  Showtimes to be announced.

Saturday, November 26

Stocker Farms (8705 Marsh Rd in Snohomish, WA) presents A Very Merry Krampus from noon to 4 pm.  Purchase a ticket in advance for 3 professional photos with touch up (digital downloads, you you can print as you like), and you can purchase a tree or wreath as well!

If you're looking for someting to buy your geeky friends, or something for yourself, Geek the Halls 2022 at the DoubleTree Hotel Portland (1000 NE Multnomah St in Portland, OR) has you covered.  The holiday craft fair takes place today and tomorrow from 10 am to 5 pm.

 

The Denton Delinquents take to the stage of the Kiggins Theatre (1011 Main St in Vancouver, WA) for a shadow cast of Repo! The Genetic Opera tonight at 9 pm.  Just hope Jude Law and Forrest Whitaker don't get confused and show up expecting to see their film.
